The Official BAHT Exchange Rate Discussion Thread!!!

Recommended Posts

Yes, the International Spot Rate is 71.5, as indicated by various currency-conversion sites.

But the exchange rate in the high-street travel agencies and Post-Office is a lot lower.

On various Internet sites I have checked, the best I could see was just over 68 which is a lot less than 71.5.

The Bangkok Bank Internet site shows a fraction over 70 Baht to the £.

Does this mean that it is best waiting to change Sterling in Thailand rather than in the UK?.

Better still, does anyone know where I can actually get this 71.5 rate??

Basically, it's better to wait until you get here before changing your money. The best way to get a rate close to the true market rate is to open a flex account with the Nationwide Building Society. They don't charge you for withdrawing funds from ATM's abroad plus they give you an exchange rate not too remote from the true rate. Even with a Nationwide ATM, I would recommend bringing travellers cheques as a back up.

You will normally get an exchange rate only a few points lower than the mid-price as quoted on the

rate calculators ie,now at 71.5 maybe get 71.2 in the exchange booths in Patters.

The way markets work you will generally find the Baht slightly stronger during thier peak season.dec thro feb.Having said that nothing is set in stone and the £ is quite strong at the moment with its current high interest rates.

Theres more of this when trying to figure it

Yes- when in Pattaya - I can confirm that when making withdrawals with my Nationwide card - I got very near the mid price - so today if in Pattaya, I might get 71.4.

I also took £1000 in sterling travelers cheques - which were saved until the last two weeks before use - I also used the Nationwide for this service - phone the number on the website - the only charge is £3.50 delivery charge with NO commission - so for £1000 of TC's, the amount on your debit card would be £1003.50p.
