Recurring Database Error

Recommended Posts

Don't know if anyone else is seeing this, but I have begun to get this when I try to access the forum late in the evening here U.S. Central Time:

IPB WARNING [2] mysql_connect(): Too many connections (Line: 131 of /ips_kernel/class_db_mysql.php)

There appears to be an error with the database.

You can try to refresh the page by clicking here.

Error Returned

SQL error: Too many connections

SQL error code:

Date: Thursday 21st of September 2006 04:28:26 AM

We apologise for any inconvenience

Presumably this is because of too many users trying to get on the forum at once.

Maybe a setting needs to be changed for database connection limit ("pooling"?)

Thanks, Ben

There's a good chance this is caused by additional load on the system due to current events in Thailand, as well as the demands of additional software features from the forum software upgrade. Tomorrow morning local time, we'll be enhancing our server's hardware.

Hang in there..it might get better.

FYI, I haven't been getting this error anymore the past few night. So whatever you did, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. That's good to know. We added more memory to the server and it seems to have fixed the problem (I've still got my fingers crossed).

After the hacker attack that occurred on Sept 15 and the following few days, it took some time to find the security holes and plug them. Once that was done, the memory issue started rearing its head, and I was still thinking "hacker", but the support staff at the server location suggested it just might be too much load for the memory on the server. Reluctantly, I agreed to pay for additional memory to see if that might be the problem, and it looks like I am stuck with the new monthly charge for the memory upgrade. But at least it appears to be working. :rotflmao

Yes, it happened again about 3:30pm local time. I checked the server and didn't find anything especially amiss except that it was temporarily busy. The problem resolved itself by itself without my doing anything.

I'm just speculating, but there are some background cleanup tasks for the forum software that might have been kicking it at that time.
