I was just reading the comments regarding re-issuing mobile phone numbers. I know

virtually nothing about this technology. Turn it on an use it, that's about it. Here is my

question to you guys who have a handle on this subject. I use a TreO 650. If I take it

with me to LOS do I simply buy a new sim card to use in Thailand? One then purchases

the amount of time you'd like to have for calls. Will this card allow you to call to anywhere?

I assume that all of the phone features will work as usual. Is my understanding about right?

Is there anything I should ask for spicifically when I purchase the sim card? Does it matter

where I purchase the card? Thanks in advance.

Go to 2nd floor- BigC or the TukCom centre, ask them to unlock the fone (if necessary), buy a D-Tac sim with whatever credit you need on it.

They will do everything for you for a couple of hundred baht & put the credit on for you.

Then ring away wherever:D

This phone IS GSM so will work in Thailand as far as the 'band' is concerned....as Agent Orange said the phone might be locked onto one USA network. This would depend on who you bought it from, did you buy it with the SIM card? You can test this by putting another SIM (a friends who uses another network) into the phone and see if it works. If it does, it is NOT locked.

Will the card allow you to ring anywhere....depends on the SIM you buy, the Thais buy some cheaper ones that only handle internal calls....1-2 Call for example, you need to opt for a 'Freedom' pay as U go package. Then you can call anywhere...so this is something to ask. I also recommend you find out about the 007 prefix for cheaper International connections. Also, if needed, enable roaming, then it also works in Laos, Cambodia...etc

Most of the phones features will work... but depends whether the Thai network supports them. I found that the USA was 'behind the times' as far as cell phone features were concerned.

If you have stored all your contact telephone numbers on your SIM card in the USA, obviously they are not there when you put another SIM in. ( The SIM card will hold them for when replaced) If you have stored them in the phone, they still won't work as they will be missing the International access codes. Many people have 2 SIM cards, as I do, and I store my contacts on the SIMs.

Much much cheaper than International roaming.....meaning if your USA network has an arrangement with one of the Thai networks, your USA SIM card can work in Thailand, (my UK one does). But as I said, this is expensive as you would pay for someone in the USA calling you.

Now I bet you are confused...

Thank you both. This does clear it up mostly. Thanks agent orange. Now I know where

to go as well as having an excellent tutoring lesson from jacko. And that is what I will do

when I get to Pattaya, hopefully in February. Thanks again :ang2

I've used 1-2 Call(didn't won't to give Toxin any more bht) for several years, never had a problem calling back to the states. Screwed up and forgot to get it renued when my friend was there in Sept/Oct. Now have to start over, but internal memory should still be there, I will just end up with a new phone number, hmmm maybe not a bad thing :chogdee .
