Report from The Nation dated Thursday 5 April 2007 :-

Bangkok Airways cuts fares

=====================

Bangkok Airways has slashed fares 40 per cent for the low season.

"The cut in ticket prices is considered the first-ever pricing strategy that the airline has adopted to boost domestic traffic in the summer season, which is not the travelling period of foreign tourists," CEO Prasert Prasaththong-osoth said yesterday.

The campaign running until June will, for example, drop ticket prices for the Bangkok-Koh Samui route to Bt2,300 per segment and Bt3,000 for the Bangkok-Siem Reap service.

Over the three months, the airline usually flies 50-60 per cent full, with Western tourists accounting for 85-90 per cent of passengers.

"The price-reducing strategy is expected to boost the airline's load factor to 85-90 per cent," Prasert said, adding that this should also help the airline achieve sales growth of 10 per cent for the year.

The move will boost spending during the still uncertain political and economic situation, he said.

The carrier this year plans to focus on route expansion within Indochina, such as to Vientiane.

Next Tuesday, it will inaugurate its route from Bangkok to Pakse, Laos, as part of its plan to build up Bangkok as a tourism hub for the Mekong region.

The Mekong zone is a top destination for Southeast Asia's culture tourism and can be conveniently served out of Suvarnabhumi Airport.
