Sometime ago I was at one of the golfshops selling copies. They showed me one Callaway set and told there is no warranty. Then another set had warranty of 3 months. When asking why is this, they told me" different factory"

So I´m not sure that all originals and copies come from the same factory.

60 minutes had a great story a few years ago, here is an excerpt:

These look like the authentic thing,” says Herrington.

What we learned is that the Great Big Bertha of China was hitting 240 yards on the robot – only 10 yards shorter than a genuine. Pretty good.

But then, we gave them to a real golfer, Jim Colbert of the PGA Champions tour, who swings with Callaways. “Uh, that’s ugly,” says Colbert.

Our club kept slicing the ball to the right of the fairway. Then Herrington showed us why: “This is supposed to be a titanium club. You paid for titanium, and you got steel.”

Unless the average golfer had a saw, he or she wouldn’t necessarily notice what 60 Minutes II discovered – that the head of our Great Big Bertha was actually two pieces welded together instead of one, which is what one might expect for $275.

The fakes and real clubs are not made in the same factory. The fake may have a mold from the real place, but that does not guarantee the same manufacturing methods or materials.

I got stuck with a Ping Raptor knockoff last year I bought for $250 as a used model. It looked exactly the same, but didn't hit the same (my nephew and brother in law are both

Buyer beware, especially in Thailand.

i guess alot depends on how long you have been playing and how serious you are when you play, ive been playing for 1 year now so im not atall serious, and i play for fun while my mates and i just rip the piss out of each other, i therefore opted to buy a set of copies from a shop opposite the residense garden that sells darts and trophies etc, i got a complete full set with bag for 9000 baht, i think they are good enough for me and a few friends who borrowed them ( who can play well ) tell me they are a nice set, look around as there are some good buys here

I bought some titleist Pro V'S and they were about 10-15% cheaper.

On the roads out to most golf courses around Pattaya there are places on the side of the road selling used golf balls. You can buy 1 dozen used Titleist Pro V1X for 400 baht, some have only been hit once or twice and in excellent condition. Many other brands including Callaway, Maxfli, at decent prices.

Not great for a present but certainly OK to use whilst in Pattaya or even bringing a few dozen back home.

Is that guy still there? I had a long chat with him a while back and he was looking to get out. Had some good info but not many sets in stock.

I ended up buying a set of Callaway knockoffs from a guy in Jomtien that sells out of his condo. I use them every week at home and they're fine. By memory it was around 3000b for the irons only.

Did I mention I had my best score ever two weeks ago playing with them? :D :clap2 :D

Do you have contact details? At that price it would be worth it to buy a set and leave them in Pattaya for future trips. At the moment I am paying 300 baht a day to hire clubs and I usually play 8-10 games on each 2 week trip. The clubs would pay themselves off in one trip.

John, that was my plan as well, but I liked the clubs so much I brought them home. :finger

The guy advertised them on that "other" forum where I'm not welcome any more. :chogdee If you do a search there under my handle you might be able to find his phone number.

That price for Pro V's sounds very good John. I have favourite shops I use like this but best I have ever found is 700 Baht. There used to be a big ball shop on the way to Khow Kheo and they sold them for 1000 Baht for a big 20 pack but they closed.

I'd be interested also in those locations , as the pro Vs I have seen are usually more than that.

This is the only Pattaya forum that I visit. To be honest I do not have any interest in visiting any other forums. I joined this forum to receive advice and hopefully contribute once in a while.

Anyway I would appreciate a contact phone number or address. I will be in Pattaya in 5 days and I am really interested in buying some clubs. I am also left handed which will make it harder. If you do not have contact details then no problem. By the way I shoot 4-5 shots better in Pattaya with hire clubs than I do back home. I think it is the whole holiday relaxation thingy.

The places that I remember on the side of the road on the way out to Plutaluang, Emerald, Green Valley, Eastern Star. I didn't buy any last trip in December but did buy some last July and that was the price I paid. Maybe they have gone up since then and the price you quoted is the new price. Anyway I am in Pattaya next week for 2 weeks and I will have a look at the current prices, plus the exact location, and report back here.

IMHO, I think one is better off to buy in their own country and bring to Thailand. Too many knockoffs and copies here. Too many Falangs and Thais out to make a quick buck. If you do buy here, be careful.

Having said that I bought a new Ping 5 driver at a shop on 3rd. It was a close out, as the Ping 10 was coming out in a few weeks. I paid 8,000 baht.

I completely agree. I would much rather buy a genuine used set than a poor copy. It's not just minor differences with some of the knockoffs - the construction materials and methods may be different.

One piece of advice, if buying a driver like you did, you could first write down the serial # and call the manufacturer to see if it was on record. Same same with irons. I called Ping when I started having doubts and they didn't have the serial # for the fake Ping Rapture driver I bought on ebay, too late for me unfortunately. They looked it up over the phone.

I agree as well but for only 3,000 baht I think it is worth purchasing knockoffs.

I know a few people here in Australia who have purchased knockoffs in Thailand and China and they are completely happy with them. Who knows maybe they will help me find my golf game again. And if not then the worst that can happen is losing the 3,000 baht.

IMHO, I think there is a difference between a "knockoff" and a "copy".

A copy is something that is being sold as the real thing and meant to cheat you. It is made with inferior materials.

A knockoff is a club that is similar to the original maybe even use some of the same original parts. (Shaft, head and grip.)

The difference for me is that one (copy) is meant to fool the buyer and the other is a quality club at a lesser price.

"Copy" or "knockoff". I have no idea of the difference and I am most likely using the wrong terminology.

I would still love to try one or the other or both. For 3,000 baht I am prepared to throw this money away. I am at the stage in my golf game where I am not enjoying it and frankly anything that may even remotely help would be great.

The guy advertised them on that "other" forum where I'm not welcome any more. :cry2 If you do a search there under my handle you might be able to find his phone number.

Which forum? Secrets? Addicts?

If anyone has any free time can you please do a search and post some contact details. I would really appreciate it as I am leaving for Thailand in under 2 days and I will not have access to this site while I am over there.

I wonder what chance I have of finding this bloke in Jomtien without any contact details?

I'd be interested also in those locations , as the pro Vs I have seen are usually more than that.

On my last trip I noticed the price of used Pro V1s range from around 400 baht to 990 baht.

On the road out to Phoenix there are at least 4 shops/stalls that sell golf balls. You should be able to get decent quality Pro V1s for 400 baht.

There is also a stall after the 8th hole at Bangpra and again the same sort of price for decent quality Pro V1s.

At Greenwood I noticed they were selling 5 Pro V1s for 200 baht.

The guy lived on Thrappaya in a condo village behind a big car yard half way down the hill on the way to Jomtien. Sorry I cant be of more help.

I wasn't able to find the person you mention but I found 2 others that sell copies. One visits Rich Man Poor Man guest house/bar in Jomtien regularly and the price is 13,000 for Callaway copies and the other one seems to visit most bars in Pattaya leaving his card and his price is the same.

I also visited the Golf Shop on 3rd Road and the price is 9,000 for Callaway copies. I tried the reall Callaway X18s for a week and they were nothing special. The asking price for these was 18,000 baht.

Those sort of prices are a little expensive considering they can be bought in China for around US$120. I know people that go to China for business but they would have the same sort of difficulty trying to find the people that sell copies/knockoffs.
