I have just relocated from The Gambia, West Africa, where I have been living for the last 4 years, and travelled via Manchester to BKK. As you can probably imagine I had plenty of luggage. I flew with Brussels Airline from Banjul to Manchester and got a massive 46 kilo allowance. From Manchester I decided to go with Qatar because not only was it cheaper but I joined their Privilege Club on line, and their website told me I got an extra 10 kilos allowance being a member of their lowest level, Burgundy. So when I got to the check in desk with a suitcase weighing 30 kilos, I smugly thought that all I had to do was to present my Privilege card. Oh NO!!! The card which they issue you upon joining is only a "Temporary" card, and you don't reach Burgundy status until you've gained 50 points. (Manchester to BKK gets you 40 points). Consequently I was 10 kilo over the limit at 35.35 GBP per kilo. You can imagine my reaction!! However, I kept my cool and argued my case, all to little avail. I was overweight and as far as the check in girl was concerned I was paying. A little more debate from me and she called the Qatar rep over. He reduced my liability to 4 kilos, and I had to pay 141GBP. Just a warning to anyone thinking of joining their Privilege club with the intention of getting an extra weight allowance. I suppose that you don't get "owt for nowt", and I should have known better, but I feel as though I was misled. Having said that, the flights were good and on time, and I'm now a little bit nearer to getting the extra allowance.

soi unwise

Was your comment aimed at the OP? If so it shows your general lack of intelligence.

I don't know of anyone who would be happy to pay £353 in unexpected costs to check in a 30kg suitcase.

I for one have rarely travelled longhaul with a suitcase less than 30kg in weight and have never been charged extra.

In one case one airline accepted a bag of 35kgs without charge.

Bangkok Airways for one allow you another 10kgs immediately as you join. This is important, as otherwise you could have problems with connecting flights.

So, unless you are a friend of the OP, your comment only serves to illustrate your obtuseness.

4niceeight,

How were you misled? The Qatar site is quite specific as to what you need to attain the various membership levels and what the benefits are once you have attained those levels.

Anyway, if you'd paid attention you would have realised what good value this forum really is. :bow

Cheshire Tom... Yes, of course you're right and I was wrong. I understand that completely. What I was trying to do was to warn other BMs about possibly misunderstanding Qatar Airways rules thus costing them money. I was unaware of the previous thread which you referred to.

Soi Unwise... I had occasion to comment once before on one of your ignorant posts. At that time I looked through all your posts on this forum. I discovered that you have contributed almost FUCK ALL to this forum since you joined, except snide ignorant comments. Why don't you do us all a favour and FUCK OFF. There are some really helpful guys here and you certainly aren't amongst them.

Flying with 30K of luggage is bad for the environment....

Could you not find 4KG of crap to unload and dump, or transfer to your hand baggage?

Sure am glad I wasn't in line behind you in Manchester....oh, I would have been in the other line, where 30 KG is no problem. :cry2

jacko,

As an aside, I am in Pattaya for a couple of days and popped into the travel agents between SkyTop and Greg's Kitchen on 2nd Road (the sign for Qatar Appointed Agent caught my eye). I asked about biz class fares to MAN and they reckon they do it for 70k Baht incl taxes. I didn't pursue availability or specific dates (I only quoted travel out in May, returning in June). The price seems to be better than anything I've been able to identify elsewhere over the last few months. They may be worth checking out.

Cheshire Tom....yes about matches my findings on the internet.(Baht 71720+12k taxes ex BKK, Qatar Airlines website.) It seems to still be widely available. Only competition to that would be China Airlines.

I noticed Massic Travel no longer include Qatar in their Biz Class section, Pattaya Mail full page advert. This agent you mention, is it on the same side as Greg's? How far down ......beyond Bangkok Bank? Not sure where Skytop is despite another BM's frequent plugs :hijack:

I still have 2 KLM tickets to use before I will try Qatar.

Let me know about Heathrow T5 if you experience it, dare I consider BA.

Two doors down from Greggs, heading south i.e. away from the Bangkok Bank.

Thanks, that should be easy to find. I notice that by June departure, Qatar fares will be up to 95,000 Baht + taxes. Honeymoon over?

Tino.

Your edited post just shows a lack of humour you Penis.

No offence !

It was edited because I had originally posted the wrong total for 10 kilos.

Why did you think that it was edited, you under-educated oik?

No offence intended. Just making an observation.
