in-room internet options and access!

hey guys,

 

I make my living as a poker player and need a vacation. Anyone know of a hotel with high speed internet access in room in pattaya and bangkok to all sites? Want to make sure i don't get there only to find my sites are blocked (pokerstars, etc). Done a little research and it looks like The Vault may be one option. Anyone know if their internet access is unlimited?

 

Also, any thoughts on whether your activity is monitored in those rooms? I am aware that gambling is strictly illegal in thailand but not sure if it's enforced ever if you're in the privacy of your own home. My guess would be no but want to make sure

 

Any thoughts/knowledge on the subject would be great and thanks

I guess that all internet casinos and poker sites are blocked in Thailand.

 

I heard from a guy who same years ago stayed with a girl in her shared apartment in BKK. There were so many shoes outside that the police raided the apartment twice that night as they suspected gambling.

 

If you watch the local TV-channel in Pattaya you can sometimes see thais arrested after playing card, under 1000 baht on the table gave jail sentences of 3 months I think.

 

So probably not the smartest thing to play internet poker in Thailand even if it's possible.

Pokerstars works fine in Thailand as of now.

 

Bear in mind that Thailand likes to block gambling sites BUT concentrates on bookies that take soccer bets. Thais don't play poker (or many other games) online.

 

Almost all other gambling sites except soccer sites, and particularly those in the UK, are, in fact, functioning fine. Pokerstars is very fast as I write this at 6 p.m. - but just remember there is no guarantee that gambling sites will be up at any given moment.

 

Any ordinary Thai Internet connection will be ... well, should be fast enough for you to play poker.

Hi there

 

Firstly, you know that gambling here is illegal so you are prepared to be caught, appear in court, risk a fine, and or jail? OK, you know the risk and are prepared to take that risk, after all you are a gambler who likes to take a risk, even with your liberty!

 

Secondly, are you aware that if you are using a hotel's internet connection then the hotel, or whoever's connection you are using, is also at risk?

 

Thirdly, don't underestimate the Thai internet police, you may think they are stupid but they are far from it. If, and eventually they will, see that you are connecting to a gambling site, even if it hasn't yet been banned, they will have access to logs which will show details of the connection you used.

 

Finally, the site will probably have a disclaimer that says that to access the site you must not be breaking the laws of the country you are accessing the site from. What happens if they refuse to pay out because you shouldn't have accessed the site from Thailand? Safer to go somewhere where you won't be risking such a lot.

 

Apart from that there are many other distractions here to pass your time with, though there are risks involved as well - use a condom.

Any idea how often things like that actually happen to online gamblers? Like one out of every three gamblers? One of every 728?

What's your opinion about why all the big UK gambling sites that facilitate soccer betting and WHICH ARE BANNED have Thai-language versions?

You are right of course that these things are against the law and some or even all of those things you say could, in an alternate universe, happen.

 

I'd just note that what you recommend to the poster is absolutely illegal under Thai law and he could wind up in prison for 20 years if he is found utilisting those distractions you think he should go after.

Seems to me that you could try accessing thru a secure proxy server outside thailand. Not sure where to find one, however I think there are paid services, so google. If you are tunnelling the normal URL thru a https connection to the proxy, then the content of the traffic should be secure, however they will know you are accessing the proxy if they look. They may also see DNS traffic looking up the IP address of the gambling site, not sure though as this may happen at the proxy end of the connection. There will also be evidence on your computer. While I think it can be done so that there is no permanent evidence on the computer, it will not be easy to do a 100% job.

 

If you want to do this properly, it will take some setting up, and as with all security exercises it is a trade-off between protection and usability/convenience, and is heavily dependent on your paranoia level and what threats you want to protect against.

What threats exist that you might want to protect against? You seem to warn of a threat of Internet monitors looking for gamblers, is that right? Do you have more information about WHAT the threat/s is/are?

stopped at the queen vic in jan and feb this year was on laddys most days no probs and fast internet wifi as well
