I am thinking of spending a few days on Koh Samed but hotels seem expensive or do not have particularly good reviews.

Can anyone recommend anything in the 1500-2000 baht range which I hope will be enough to get me something reasonable.

Thanks

Tallguy

Hi mate, not 100% sure but don’t you have to book a “package” from a travel agent to go there as it’s a national park and must be pre booked?

The only other person I know who’s been there is TP so pm him here or the other board he may be able to spread some light on it.

I do know it’s a take your own entertainment sort of place though. You planning a little “romantic” getaway during songcran?

I know you have to have accomodation booked separately before arriving on the island but you can book it separately through sites like sawasdee. Im going to visit a couple of travel agents today anyway as might be able to get a better deal than what sawasdee have available.

Yup I am planning to take a lady with me but not songkran. For songkran I am going upto Khon Kaen to see Dr Mick.

I'll PM TP .

Don't know where you got this information from but I can assure you it is 100% WRONG! There is absolutely no requirement to pre-book anything before going to Koh Samet, you can simply go to eg "Malibu Travel" and book/pay for a mini-bus to the ferry and arrive on the Island unheralded.

I do this on every trip for a few days to escape the Pattaya mad-house.The cost is around 650bht R/T per person, including the ferry fare.Upon arrival there is a National Park entrance fee of 200 bht (Farang) and 40 bht (thai) fee.

There are hundreds of rooms of varying price/quality readily available and as long as your arrival is on a weekday you should have no trouble getting a room.Prices vary between 600bht-3000+.

I enjoy it's relaxing experience but it is essentual to take your own company as very little is available there.

:party

P.S Make sure you get a ferry going to NADAN HARBOUR which is best for popular beaches. The other "Malibu resort ferry" will drop you off just off the beach on to a pontoon, this resembles the dunkirk landings, also you will be ripped off by the baht bus mafia to get back to popular beaches.

If there is a few of you going organise a taxi from one of the travel agents.Last time they took 4 of us to Ban Phe for 800 all in (3 years ago) and we could have got the Malibu Boat for 60 baht each but opted for a speed boat.

Malibu always in my experience drop anchor at Vongduan beach (spelling) and right in the centre of the beach slightly more prominent than other "room for rent" offices we paid 800 baht with fan from the vendor.

Pointless to book a package in advance as you end up in same rooms.

Thanks for this very comprehensive response. The info re pre booking is something I have picked up on the boards.

I want to go this weekend so will probably try to pre book something.

Thanks to the other guys who responded as well.

Silver sands 1500 the rooms are basic ac fan & fridge TV but the location and amenities are good and they actually spray the mousketos around the huts

And it’s got a disco till 3 am, that attracts the stray cunt,

But stay away from Koh semet at the weekends and Thai holidays

The Thaïs invade the place pissed up on Thai whiskey

And the motorbike rent boy at the entrance is a chiselling little cunt! Fuck him right off

I go to Samet on a fairly regular basis and over the past few years have thought it has gone downhill somewhat.

The accomadation is getting worse and more pricey.

It no longer feels like an island retreat

the main st from the pier to white sand is very dirty with rubbish everywhere.

Having said that, if i was a business man i would surely open a mini-mcdonalds beside the 7-11 on the main st in samet. I guess i would be a millionaire within 1 year. (This only surpasses my "traditional english chippy takeaway" idea for walking st!!!)

It's entirely incorrect to think that you need to pre-book accomm. in Ko Samed.

Having said that, I strongly recommend that you book a package that includes transport (from Pattay, I presume) to Ban Phe public WHARF (not Ban Phe town), plus the seven-kilometre ferry hop to Na Dan (Samed’s only “town”) and a transfer to your resort. You’ll cut out the hucksters, fuckwits and mis-informants, and several long waits.

Pattaya tour companies will sometime pull a scam of delivering you to their Ban Phe town agent's office. Then you have top pay for a taxio to the wharf. (Fuckem!)

Sai Kaew Beach Resort is good the mid-range with a good variety of bungalows and villas.

Tu Tu Bunglows at at Ao Phai beach is cheap but not nasty.

It's still a nice island, especially if you go exploring down the east coast.

I am somewhat puzzled by your comments in as much as I have been to Samet on 3 occassions and each time used "Malibu Travel" mini bus transport. This drops me off at their town office and then it's merely a 5 minute WALK to the pier, and never even seen a TAXI for hire! Whilst it would be convenient to be delivered to the pier it's no deal breaker.

Regarding the arrival provided you ensure that you get the NADAN ferry and not the Malibu resort one, then it's only a 40 bht baht bus ride almost to the beach. Alternatively if you are fit (I'm not) you can walk to the beach in 10 minute comfortably. I am not aware of any tour company that offers transport door to door from Pattaya to any beach on Samet.

I further agree with the earlier poster that this place has gone downhill in all aspects and getting ridiculiously more expensive year by year!
