My "stay logged in" works fine FWIW.

As Bruce said, it SOUNDS like you're deleting cookies, maybe one of your "security" features?

I have been getting the same since the board changed a couple of weeks ago, sometimes can stay logged in for days, but today it has not worked.

I am either using the browser within AOL 9 or Internet Explorer 8 on it's own.

o,

I think (but am not sure yet), that the new board software is checking the IP address you logged in with, and if it is different, is requiring you to log in again. So, if you have an ADSL connection that reconnects, you might have a new IP address and fall into this area.

I tend to log in with 3 or 4 computers with different IP addresses, and have to log in now. I guess it's a security feature.

Thanks for the reply MM.

I know it's not a "cookie" problem as I never delete them from my favourite sites.

However, my ADSL connection via a router does get the occasional disconnection and I do not have a static IP address, so that may be why I have to login again.

I wouldnt have thought it was due to the IP address as the other forums with the same software dont log you out every time.
I doubt it's the IP address. Probably the cookie set in each machine you log in from has a serial number or some other identifying characteristic, and the board software compares the last one it assigned to your user ID with the one in the cookie it checks when you access the board under your board name. If the serial number of the cookie in the machine you access the board from doesn't match the last one the board assigned to you, it makes you log in again. That's how I would write the software anyway.

Now I am logged onto two computers sharing the same IP address via a WIFI connection, so it doesn't appear to be the identifying characteristic of the computer(s) that prevents two simultaneous logins. That feature is available, but I have turned it off to try to determine why logins are being requested frequently.

I'm still puzzling it out as well, guys, so if it is happening to you, I apologize. It is happening to me sometimes, but not in a way that I can predict (yet).

Interesting, thanks for that tidbit of information. Could it be time-related? Edited by Bruce Mangosteen

That's another angle to explore. There's currently a setting to remove inactive sessions after 1 hour, but that doesn't seem to affect much since I leave the computer logged in and idle at home for 8 hours or more at a time.

The forum has numerous security checks it can perform to prevent hijacking someone's session, but I have turned most of them off to investigate this problem and make the system more convenient to use.

Well, since not everybody is seeing this problem, I would tend to suspect that the problem is local to the machine(s) that are supporting it. Again, as far as I know, logins are almost always handled with cookies.

To find out whether the problem is at TFC's end, I would suggest having him tell you his browser version and all his browser settings. PMing you screenshots would be the most efficient way to do that I should think. I would imagine that you would be able to tell him how to change his configuration to avoid this problem if he does that.

If his configuration looks OK to you, configure the same version of browser the exact same way and see if you can replicate the problem. If you can, you have a place to start if you think it's fixable from your end. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it's really the only way to be sure you are replicating his exact problem.

Then, if you think the problem is at the board software end, you can disable ALL login-related checks, then enable them one by one, testing for the login problem after enabling each check, until you replicate the problem. That is the classical way to solve a problem like this. However, you first have to have a computer that mimics TFC's symptoms.

PS: Yes, I AM a software guy! Sorry if you weren't looking for this level of advice. :clueless

Yes, I'm with you. I think it is (first of all) browser specific. These days folks go back and forth between browsers. When I crank up a new browser, I need a new cookie and have to log in. For example. I try to keep this site up in the same browser all the time, and I have no problem that I've noticed with staying logged in. Browsers these days "help" you by deleting cookies (why??? I LIKE cookies) and so do some alleged "security" programs, so I'd look there first.

That might explain why the problem seems to have gone away for me.

New observation:

The Search function offers a limited search capability - unlike the previous version.

I only use IE8 and NOTHING is deleted on closing the browser session.

AOL incorporates a version of IE, but I seldom use this integrated version.

On reflection, it is NOT an IP address issue, as I am a member of many web boards and I am only having the problem here since the last board ugrade.

MM, for info.

Today, I have visited the board 3 or 4 times and each time it remembered me, I was using IE8 with cookies enabled and nothing being deleted on closing the browser, nothing manually deleted either.

I then rebooted my router and got a new IP address.

I then had to log in again.

PS. Just closed browser and re-opened and it remembered me !

I just tried an experiment where I used two computers on different networks with different IP addresses to log into pattayatalk at the same time. Both logins were accepted and remained. I then closed both browsers and then reopened my sessions with ptalk on each computer. I was still logged in on both computers.

I think it's something else. Puzzling.

Can you try this? On the main page, when you're looking at the forum section listing, there is a clickable line that says "Delete all cookies for this board" or something like that. Can you click that. You'll need to log in again after that, but I'm thinking you might have a "damaged" or incompatible cookie from the old board software.

Cookies for the board cleared as requested, had to log in again.

Browser closed and re-opened and I was remembered.

Router rebooted, new IP address, NOT remembered !

Oh, my aching head. Time for me to contact software support.

I'll get back to you.

MM, just for info, I am in no way complaining, honestly !

Put computer in HIBERNATE and went away for 2 hours.

Router stayed connected with the same IP address.

Came back to this board and found I was logged out.

Logged in OK and the board had my last log in time as correct.

Navigated away to another couple of boards, both remembered me OK, one from a couple of days ago.

Came back here and was still logged in.

I suggest you go and drink lots of beer, at least your head will hurt for another reason.

Best Regards,

Martin, Troon, Scotland, UK.

PS Been back several times tonight, always "remembered" , but "last visit" time never changes !

Try it now. I've been told by the software support folks who wrote the board software that the problem is resolved. It seems my cookies were crumbling.
