Alternative to Residence Garden

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Been to Pattaya three times and have stayed all three at Residence Garden. I like everything about it (location, room, staff, guest policy, etc.) except the internet connection. It works well enough most of the time for most things, but it's not reliable enough for making calls on Skype, which I sometimes have to do. So I'm looking for some recommendations on an alternative. Has to be guest friendly, good clean rooms, good location relative to Walking Street (short baht bus ride ok), and reliable (preferably wired) internet. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I am here at RG right now and have been for a bit over 2 weeks. The internet is vastly improved since my last visit when I left the middle of January this year. It is now free and it seems they have upgraded their system. I can't speak to how affective Skype is, but I do know that I am impressed with the upgrade. Hope this helps.

I stayed for three weeks and as of March 30th; The speed was OK, but the connection gets dropped on occasion and sometimes you can't reconnect for a while. It was out for at least 12 hours one day.

All in all I would say it's a pretty good connection if you just need to keep up with email, etc. The overall percentage of staying connected is pretty good, but, I can imagine that when you need it most...

Anyway, if you need a reliable connection for work, I would be concerned. Then again, I can't recommend an alternative as it's the only place I have stayed in Pattaya with wifi, so, maybe it's par for the course.

I think they've had a new wifi system put in.

I spent the day round by the pool on Songkran day with the owners son and I asked him what the big mast was in the gardens, the wifi system was his reply.

Theres was a palm tree leaf in front of it though.

I had two rooms at different times. Both on the front near reception. First was facing the kiddy pool, no wifi in spots inside and no wifi on the balcony (can't imagine why?) The second room was aslo poolside and in certain spots inside the room there was no connection.

In the breakfast area outside, I could always get a signal, but sometimes I could not connect.

I'm guessing the walls are cement and that is part of the problem.

Funny, I could always get a signal from the family mart across the street (never connected though, as you have to pay).

For the record, my party had three Apple devices and a Dell, so it was not our equipment (or it was one hell of a coincidence :) )

I'm not kidding about the palm tree leaves, they hang right over the signal box inbetween it and the hotel.

Try Bella Villa Prima on Soi 4. I have stayed there several times and it has been the most reliable of half a dozen places I have tried. Of course, this being Thailand, you will not find the quality and sustainability of connection you enjoy back home. I have also heard good things about Pattaya Bay Resort but have not stayed there.

Thanks all for the advice and info. I'm in Singapore on business and hoping to make it up to Pattaya for a few days this weekend or next week. A round at FLB on me for those that replied. I'll post here if/when I make it in.

In California they dress the cell phone towers to look like palm trees. Pretty bizarre.

Are there smoking rooms with balconies with a garden view and some privacy? I know there is no seaview right? RG is getting into my top five for the next trip.

Almost all the rooms have a small balcony with table and two chairs. To my knowledge you can smoke in any room.

The hotel is designed so that almost every room has some sort of pool view.

There are two pools. The pool in the front is much busier, gets lots of sun. The pool in the back gets less sun and is much quieter.

Okay, so I'm on my way in from Singapore now. Anyone want to have a beer at FLB tonight (Friday), say around 8 pm?

I ended up booking RG as I was too late and Villa Bella Prima was all booked :D . Unfortunately, I wasn't able to plan ahead. Just happy to be on my way, tho. :D
