If I remember rightly, that 5:1 England win was only a preparation game for Germany's 2006 world cup campaign, where England failed to qualify for the tournament. :D

It was a qualification game for the 2002 WC.

I had no problems understanding what Stefan was trying to say. English is not his first language. What is yours? You are getting more cantankerous by the day. It probably comes from sitting 15 hours in front of your computer every day, reading, writing and nitpicking posts from other members. :D :

Sorry about my mistake. I forgot to Google and the old memory is not getting any better. By the way, I watched almost every game of the 2002 World Cup on the big screen at Tim's Bar Beer a GoGo on Second Road. Tim's used to be a terrific place to hang out in those days, but didn't I spend some money on the check bins, enticed by the well-trained girls by the old dragon. :D

Win or lose today- England as a country is partying.

Blue sky, 28c+ everyone is out in the garden, smell of barbies. Crates of beer and cider being carted out of Tesco, while a guy drives by with "Vindaloo" playing at full blast on his stereo..... houses, cars, pubs, shops, decked with the St. Georges flag.

It is quite a day on our tiny island. you can feel the atmosphere- it's great !

Hi,

I think England have been really poor so far. Sweinsteiger and Ozil seemed to have injuries in the game against Ghana. If those 2 are fit and Klose is back I can only see one result.

Hi

Sorry I was right mate. When it comes to betting there is no room for sentiment.

Okay, nid's last word- unless provoked ! :beer

Sorry I will bore you with my point about no country ever winning the world cup, under a foreign manager.

Our problem as far as I can see is an English problem. Previous WC winners, have been the top teams in the world, with ex player Managers from their own country to take charge. England has some who qualify for the post, but the Suits/ Blazers of the FA, seem to have a mentality that swerves from the obvious choices. Remember Brian Clough- the best manager England never had ? In fact their initials are the most apt in the world. What do they do for English Football ? Sweet F.A. !

Look at how Scotland performed under a German Manager ! They can be excused for not using an ex player though. :beer

It is not a good start mentally, for a team like England to be led by a foreigner. Yes teams like Australia, Japan and several African countries will have a European manager, but England ???

To the BBC's credit they did have Roy Hodgson and 'Arry there as pundits in S.Africa. Two prospective Gaffers for me.

The choices a manager makes, can affect a teams mentality and performance. It happens at all levels.

Andy Scott bought into Brentford's side an ex £9m Premiership striker Carl Cort. He was our front man for a few months and did bugger all. He was our Emil Heskey of the time. The rest of the team seemed miffed by his choice above the regular strikers. Their performance went down hill for about 6- 8 games. Carl got left out of the regular starting eleven and things picked up, we had better results without him. The sub's bench made Carl think again about his performance and his position. By the end of the season, he was taking extra training- lost half a stone and was a much better team player. It spread positively through the team as much as his arrival did negatively.

The difference was, we had a whole season to adjust him and the rest of the team. England only had a few games of the World Cup. To have a Manager who is was not on an English footballers wavelength, did not bring out the sides full potential. It don't take much to tip the balance of a game of football, a goal, good play from one of your own side..... I think we had it all wrong from the off. Most English fans of the game, were mystified by his player and position choice.

It's one thing to lose when playing the right people, in the right places, with the right attitude. Another to lose without it, while letting an Italian- or any other foreigner, make the decisions.

I know- bad loser !

No. Just a disappointed one.

Yes we may have lost anyway to Germany, but it would have been "Our way " :D

Thanks for explaining it, then, because I sure didn't.

Seems one of us is cantankerous, all right.

Good post Nid.Sad and true.

To an Aussie, you are the old enemy, with the usual argy bargy involved, but, I wanted England to beat Germany and go further, in fact I would have cheered for you if you had gone through to the final.

If you are not familiar with the clay you can't make a good pot. Simple.

In our case Verbeek blew it with the German game. Wrong combination, wrong tactics and fear of the opposition.

We had him for two and a half years, and he still didn't get it.

As the ex Aussie player, and now commentator, Craig Foster said, "We didn't learn anything. He learned a lot"

Look at what the Kiwis did with a local bloke and what basicaly amounted to a NZ club side.

Tear it all down and start again!

Another unimpressive win by Holland, beating a weak Slovakia team 2:1. There is no way Holland will lift the cup on their present piss-weak form. Their only player showing good form was van Robben and the Dutch goalkeeper, or should I say goaltender. He denied Slovakia, by making a couple of good saves. :beer

Hi

You are forgiven.

I expected little else from a Gooner, who doesn't support a team with Englishmen in it. :beer You lot lost your Englishness yonks ago.

Give that young Szczesny a go in goal next season, or we'll have him back at G. Park.

Hi,

Well the games get serious now. Ghana, Uruguay, Paraquay and Germany have outperformed my expectations. I backed Paraquay to win in 90 mins the other day but they needed extra time. Spain have disappointed up to now but looked better against Portugal. Argentina and Brazil and Holland have performed at a level I hoped they would. I've done OK so far and have had a small bet on Uruguay in case they surprise Argentina. Thats the way I see it. How do ye see it ?

Jeez, the Dutch are getting hammered here. If they can come back in the second half I'm a Chinaman.

Ni hao, wacmedia! :allright

The Dutch just brought it level, with the first own goal for Brazil in World Cup history, says ESPN.

(No TV so I'm listening to Internet radio...)

Felipe Melo better watch his back when he gets back to Brazil. First he let in an own goal, then now he's red carded and off the pitch.

Edit: Netherlands have scored two goals in a match against Brazil three times, more than any other nation at the World Cup (France, Hungary, Italy and Sweden all 2x), says ESPN.
