expired visa pay now or later ?

Recommended Posts

done a search on this topic but it seems visa info changes week to week

chatting to a guy last night who is really concerned with his visa as it expired april 1st he was under impression that he could simply pay the overstay at airport and everything is fine

he was not aware if he gets caught with expired visa he will most likely be arrested held and deported that information was given to him by his hotel when he enquired about visa extension

Ive suggested he go to patts immigration declare and attempt to get 7 day extension

so does anyone know currently if they will issue 7 day if visa expired ?

or should he take his chances and if he makes safely through the week which is a hit or miss option and then pay his dues as he leaves ?

Its his first visit here so he hasnt ant past history of neglect

finally anyone know currently whats the real deal at the airport ?

My Aussie mate overstayed his 30 day visa on arrival by about 4 or 5 days. I saw him in line at BKK airport as he ended up leaving the same day as me. He told me they charged him 5 or 6 hundred baht. Not sure if he go into trouble but he didn't seem too worried. This was 2 months ago. Not sure about 7 day visa stuff, hope this helps.

If you go to immigration they will clear it up, probably with a 7-day extension and the normal 500-baht fine. Waiting for the airport has the risk you state. It's a small risk, but certainly more than zero.

Edit: Please note "probably". The only certainty is that for four-five day overstay there's no jail or similar. The EXACT way they will "clear it up" -- as always in Thailand -- depends.

will go with him to jomtien tomorrow see how it goes and will post an update

Updated info well it was easy only drawback being that they had Internet issues and were referring customers to the next day on both visits not sure if this is to ease congestion

or genuine it meant an extra day fine for him

anyways
