I have some questions I hope people can help with. I have always enjoyed my visits to Thailand and would like to extend them to 2-3 mths at a time, however I would require access to broadband internet on a basis of as much as 8 hrs a day during the week. Obviously the only way I can see to acheive this would be to rent an appt and have it setup.

1) How widely available is broadband such as adsl to home users in Pattaya?

2) How reliable is it compared to Europe?

3) I have heard that where broadband is available it is very costly. Anyone have any experience to put an average cost on say 256kb unlimited access by the month?

4) Who are the best providers in Pattaya? (assuming it is available)

Thanx, in advance for the help

At the Jomtien beach paradise last year was a free internet connection in the room. Some times had trouble with it. As I am informed from the owner the internet connection developed overthere to a sattelite connection. You connect him and figure out.

If you have a telephone line, you can buy tickets to use internet on your laptop, not too expensive.

Internet cafe usually 1 bat/minute. ( 2 bat in hotels )

Thanks Gabor, the Jontien Salellite connection may be worth a look, although my experience with anything satellite in Thailand is that in heavy rain it is rendered useless. I am aware of the internet cafe costs as I am a frequent visitor to Thailand, as I said I need access 8-9 hours a day weekdays, that is roughly 20 days a month or about 180 hrs so internet cafe would be cost prohibitive. Similarly dialup would be pricey and in any case not fast enough for what I require. Thanks anyway.

Thanx Vox, that's helpful, hadn't come across this provider before, cable looks promising if it doesn't get taken out in the rainy season. Prefer ADSL but he carrier fee tacked on by the telephone company makes it a bit pricey.

Thanx again

Have you had any luck with getting reasonable internet roguetrader?  I am just starting to look into the same thing and was hoping to bootstrap myself with your research  :)

Un-fortunately Frammel, my research has not been intensive yet as it was simply an inquiry to the helpful guys on the forum prior to going out to LOS. I will however be in Thailand from early December and will begin my search in earnest, and will post any info I can find. So far all I have been able to ascertain is that dial-up is of varying reliability with the 1222 numbers getting a lot of thumbs down as being difficult to connect to. ADSL very expensine and I am not sure how widespread in Pattaya, and satellite well dodgy in the rain, probably things you already knew. Anyways as I say will be there in early Dec and will be researching it from the start.

From what I can find out ADSL is available in Pattaya and therefore should be available anywhere around Pataya within a 5km radius of the exchange that provides it. Dialup or broadband here are some sites that may be of use

Nexy question has got to be 'How long must I wait before they actually install it'?

I think any hotel or serviced apartment that offers broadband internet has a distinct advantage over the competition. It's getting very common now in Bangkok Hotels.

Just arrived LOS last night staying at Jontien Paradise Beach. In room satelite connection, couldn't connect last night but an 11 hr flight and a few Singha beer may have been the problem, connected this am ok and connection is fast so far, see how reliability goes over the next week or so.

Roguetrader I used to get the 60 hour dialup cards for a friend who had an internet cafe for only 500Bt from an Indian run travel agent halfway down either Soi 2 or Soi 3. This was in July and was cheaper than anywhere else in town. I think it is called Sunshine Travel. Sorry to be a bit vague but I'm losing my marbles these days & can't check with friend as I've lost contact since he went to live in Cambodia.

Hi Rouge,

Did you have to arrange the connection or did it come with the room?  Is this a serviced apartment ro a hotel?

Please keep us up to date on how it works out.  I, for one, would appreciate it!

Regards,

Hi Rouge,

Are you in Pattaya or Bangkok?

I was recently told by a trader that he had no problems with the in-room DSL at the Grand Presdient in Bangkok.

But your frustration does give me concern.  It may have to be Kuala Lumpur for me in the end.

I just heard the opposite; at least for the moderately priced rooms they have there.

Really?  Any details?  The only complaint I've heard is that it gets really slow.  Speed doesn't matter to me all that much because I send tiny bits of information, but information is constantly being exchanged so I need stability.

Here are the choices in Pattaya.

ADSL is available only in the area close to Beach Rd.  It is unlikely, but not impossible that you would get an apartment within this area.

Satellite, down, phone up, is the most readily available broadband service and is fairly consistent 256k down 56 k up.  Cost is 3,000 baht a month and installation a few days if you already have a phone.

ISDN is available within 3km of the central exchange at 112k up and down.  It's expensive.

Dial up service is readily available throughout Pattaya and a good provider like Loxinfo should see you surfing at a fairly constant 40k or so.

Loxinfo will shortly be launching a new 2 way satellite service supposedly at speeds of 1 meg up and down.  No costing available yet.

The 3,000 baht a month satellite package include 1.5 gigs of data transfer.  Their accounting is a bit wobbly though as I regularly exceed the 1.5 gigs and in 2 years have only been charged for the extra once.

Hi im just wondering how much was the installation fee for the satellite package? im in the same situation as many seem to be needing a permanant unlimited internet connection. has anyone any information on how reliable the satellite connections are any information is appriciated.
