Hi...we are considering Pattaya as our Xmas Holiday and would appreciate advice whether it's an appropriate family destination.

We loved the action and sites of Bangkok (minus kids)but are concerned that there might be too much "action" for our 7 & 8 year olds in Pattaya.

Frankly, is sex everywhere?  Are there places where we can take our kids without concern?  We aren't prudes - we just want to protect our kids innocence.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Hi Adelaide,

Pattaya is definately NOT a family holiday destination.

The answer is that sex is everywhere that tourists are, because the majority of tourists to Pattaya are male sex tourists.

If you want a 'straight' family holiday, go elsewhere.  There are a few touristy places in Pattaya like the auqatic fun park and bowling etc, but these places are limited.  More importantly, the beaches at Pattaya are dirty and not recommended for swimming (you'll see almost no swimmers there).  What you will see at the beach as almost anywhere, is older, overweight males walking around hand in hand with a pretty, young thai woman.  If you are not offended by this, no problem.

The majority of night spots are pickup spots as well, although there are a few 'straight' places.

So if you want a straight forward family holiday, go elsewhere.

*BUT* if by liking the action you mean you indulge in the adult action yourself, then you can probably cobble together enough things for your kids to do, as long as you don't mind them continually seeing men with there escorts (your kids will not really see anything too risque unless they go into a nightspot).

If you have seen the action in Nana plaza etc, Pattaya is just a very much larger version of the same activity.

Its quite simple:

if you want a family holiday in a place that is set up for families, go to Phuket or Ko Samui (but choose carefully as some hotel resotrs are dedicated to families and some aim themselves at the sex industry that also exist there).

If you want some 'action' yourselves and don't mind the kids seeing men with prostitiues or literally hundreds of bars where the main activity is of the pay for play variety, you can find things for your kids.

Totally disagree with the above

We took our daughter there last year in May and she had a whopping time.

You wont see anything on the streets in Pattaya that you wouldnt see in most other cities anywhere else in the world.

OK a few ladyboys but she saw quite a few of them in Paris so that was no big surprise.

Theres tons to do and we hired a Babysitter to be in our room and look after our little one for 500Baht a night from 8 till 12 so we could go out .

Go for it

My opinion is I'm halfway between SlipSlopSlap and Crackpot/Dave.

Pattaya is built upon and is there because of the sex industry. To a lot of Western moral's this means a bad place. If you see it from the Thai point of view it hasn't the same gravity of revulsion that is generated in the West.

If you allow your children to experience all parts of life and encourage them to think, ask questions and make up their own mind then there is no problem with Pattaya.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to wait a little time and let your children have a slower introduction to what Pattaya has to offer then I would suggest Pattaya is a place to avoid.

What about a few days in Pattaya for the crocodile farm, Big Buddha etc and then on to Koh Samui or Phuket where the sex industry in less "in your face"?

It is a decision only you, as a parent, can make because only you know how you want your children to be brought up, how much you want them to experience and at what age. You know your children and it is ultimately your decision how you nurture and teach them.

Whichever way you choose, have a great time!

I would recommend that if you do have concerns, then you consider staying in Jomtien, its much quieter there and only a 10 minute BahtBus ride over the hill to Pattaya. But as the other guys have said you won't see enything in the streets that you would not see in any other large city on a Saturday night.

Cheers [smiley=grin.gif]

7&8 Year olds are in a different world at that age so they wouldnt pick up on much. But I dont think it would be fair to take a kid (male) over 12 or 13 who is starting to figure out what its all about.

I thought this was a discussion board where differing views and opinions were discussed. If you get annoyed so easily, may I suggest you either seek medication or stop reading the board.

Pattaya is for families, ignore the arseholes. You and your wife and kids will have a fantastic time there.Ignore the types who want to keep it middle aged men only, they are a dying breed. My missus loves gogo bars and she is only thirty.Pattaya is changing fast.

These old blokes will be dead soon.

like most here i agree you can take the kids and still enjoy the sites that pattaya has to offer besides the bar scene.

kids i have seen there with families seem to enjoy the atmosphere as much as mum and dad,and lets face it your not going to be taking the kids too sois 6-7-8 or pattalands 1-2 at night so can't see any problems.

its common these days to see a family in walking st at night ,so i wouldn't avoid taking them there. but like all say get a baysitter if you want ot go into the bars and check out the scene.

the kids will love  the place and they won't be bored like can happen in some bigger cities.

I've taken my 15 y/o daughter to Pattaya Park Hotel in Jomtien and she loved it. Plenty to do at the water park and the beach was clean. On another trip we stayed at the Marriott.

Matter of fact, we are comming back to Pattaya Park next June for 2 nights. Staying in BKK for the rest of the trip.
