Is it possible that a 26 yr old white guy from the U.S. can find a job in pattaya, that does not involve esl? Something that can pay for the room and board... or am I dreaming? This will be my first trip to Thailand, and it sounds like I want to stay long term. I am willing to travel.  Any ideas? Or am I insane? Please post here, or give me an email at musicofthehart@hotmail.com.

If you want to work in Thailand, you must first obtain a work permit. As far as I know, though others may correct me if I'm wrong, these are quite difficult to obtain. One of the criteria as far as I know is that the type of work you propose doing is something that cannot be done by a Thai, which does restrict the possibilities somewhat.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

The young guys who work in places like Pattaya generally don't strike me as the type who had to go asking how to go about it.

If you are smart and resourceful enough and deal with people well, you can find ways to make money.  unless you are amazingly lucky, you are not going to find someone to give you a normal 9-5 job and you are unlikely to be working legally.

Good luck,

Each time I go to Pattaya I speak to some of the owners of small businesses. Pattaya is full of them. I offer to make them a website at a ridiculously low cost. When I get home, I do the website. When I return to Pattaya, I collect the money or goods in kind.

Apart from doing my bit to put a little back into Pattaya, I make new friends who I meet with. It gives me a good feeling.

If you lived there all the time it would be worth cultivating this sort of business. It won't make you any big money but I would guess it would be enough to exist on.

Good ones so far.... Am i correct in assuming that their are tons of farang trying to scrape together a few $ so they can stay? Im wondering just what level of hustler I have to be, to break even. I know that one of you reading this is an expert in this area. Please let me know if my hopes of finding some sort of employment, no matter how unorthodox, are a pointless effort. Its not that I NEED money currently, I am just thinking long term. Do bars employ LARGE young Farang as bouncers?

No.  But large bouncer types probably know people who would like to get packages of labeled, sealed and shrink-wrapped "Thai ginsing" that have been mistakenly filled with dianabol.   ;)

BTW, one thing that has not been mentioned.  As this is your first trip you probably should not be thinking long term just yet.  Thailand does funny things to people.  I had a friend who was just there and had to leave after two days as the place was turning him insane.

In the "unorthodox" arena there are a lot of shady people (farangs) who wont think twice about screwing you over.  And disputes are not going to be settled in the legal system.  If you show up on your first trip looking for some unorthodox way of living my guess is that you are going to get fucked over by people who you will think are friends.

I would want to spend a LONG time getting to know the scene before I was willing to go into a business venture or work on the wrong side of the law in Thailand.  I certainly do not consider myself savvy enough to know the angels from the devils and wouldn't make any investments without spending a year or more out there.

All that said I'm moving out to SEAsia later this spring.  Though I may set up shop in Kuala Lumpur rather than Bangkok for various reasons (but hey, it's a $50 RT flight to BKK).

What skills to you bring to the table? Lots of guys have computers that need to be fixed. Mainly software related problems.

well... I have a degree in computer repair, and web page design. I  consider myself VERY street savvy. I have done a few Grateful Dead tours (if any of you have checked into that sean) and usually can come up with something to make ends meet. But I am not interested in doin anything that'll put me into the pokey, (the bad kind of pokey) I am flexable on location as well. As long as I stay in Asia. Thanks for the ideas so far... PLEASE keep em coming. I am not to worried that Ill go crazy in 2 days and want to split. I can survive in just about any environment.

I want you to stop by Sky-Top hotel, 2nd Rd. It's 30 meters or so away from soi 6 going toward soi7 on the other side of the street. Talk to Pete the owner about his PC. They are loaded with spyware, porn and all sorts of crap. You may be able to work a deal where you stay for free and square away his 4 PC. Tell him Denny sent you.
