international drivers license

Recommended Posts

If I want to hire a motor for a day or two in Samui, will the hirers accept the non-photo, green UK licence or do I need international?

There is no way I am hiring a motor bike!!!

Maybe if only for 1 day around the island a taxi will do a decent deal.

How? Where do we obtain one?. What kind of test is it?Difficult? Where do we obtain study material?  Thanks Doorman [smiley=help.gif]

An International Driving Licence may be aobtained from one of the bigger Motoring organisations in your country.

No test is necessary so long as you have a driving licence already.

Please note Thailand drives on the correct side of the road though

hi doorman its very important to have an international licence in thailand  -if your stopped by the police and you havent got one your in the shi*,you dont need a test to get one , just apply for one as the other poster said, also take some photocopys of your passport ,you can give the vehicle  hirer a photocopy instead of your actual passport!!(if u hire a vehicle they retain  your p/port and return it when u bring back the vehicle-if your stopped by the cops and u have no p/port on you -you guessed it your in the shi*!SIMPLER  TO USE A TAXIE!

Information on an international driving permit is available at the AA web-site

http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/index.html

I haven't looked into this properly yet but hope it's helpful. I did notice, however, that the permit is used in conjunction with your UK licence NOT in place of it.

After checking into where to obtain the international permit. For us people that drive on the "right" side of the road in the u.s. It can be obtained neither at dmv or the post office. But at one of our local insurance companies. AAA american automobile association. 10 dll u.s. and 6 dll u.s. for 2 passport size pictures.  thanks gents for your input       DOORMAN

I.D. License vs I.D. Permits...here's some info from the internet:

<<International Drivers Licenses are a SCAM!

WisDOT cautions drivers; international driver's license is a fraud

*

It should not be confused with an International Driving Permit (IDP) which can be purchased from an automobile association

April 30, 2002

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) warns drivers that international driver's licenses do not exist. They are a scam. Any individual or company trying to sell them should be avoided. Claims regarding these non-existent, worthless documents are many and are increasing on the Internet. Be wary of claims such as:

Need a new driver's license? Too many points or other license trouble? Want a license that can never be suspended or revoked? Want ID for nightclubs or hotel check-in? Avoid tickets, fines and mandatory driver's education. Protect your privacy, and hide your identity. Take advantage of your rights. Order a valid International Driver's License that can never be suspended or revoked. Confidentiality assured. Call now!

Division of Motor Vehicles Administrator Roger Cross points out, "This scam is all the more confusing because something called an International Driving Permit does exist." International Driving Permits (IDPs) may be purchased for $10 from an automobile association authorized by the U.S. Department of State. At this point, only the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance are authorized distributors. IDPs are honored in more than 150 countries outside the United States and function as a legal identification document that translates U.S. driver's license information into 11 foreign languages. An IDP is not a replacement for a valid U.S. state license and should only be used as a supplement nor is it valid in an individual's country of residence. A driver would only need an IDP if visiting a country that doesn't recognize a driver's license from the United States or renting a car from a company that requires one.

Cross further stated, "In a time when valid forms of identity are of increased importance, we want to ensure that our customers have all the facts. An international driver's license is a scam. An International Driving Permit is not." >>

  • 2 weeks later...

While in Thailand Nov 2003 I was issued a Thai car licence on the strength of my Australian I D P. Only had to have a non immigrant visa and pass the colour perception test. I had to sit the written exam and a driving test for my Thai motor bike licence as I had no motorbike licence listed on my I D P.

Contrary to popular belief purple bribes would not work.

Only reason I got the licences was for insurance cover in case of a prang.
