This is a cut and paste from the members FAQ section, written by PattayaPete:

 

Songkran is the Thai New Year.  It is celebrated throughout Thailand and is particulary vigourous in Pattaya and Chiang Mai.

 

The official dates are 13 and 14 April.  These are a national holidays.

 

Pattaya has a week long festival starting on the 13th and finishing on the 19th.  As the week progresses the celebrations get more and more vigourous with the last day being biggest by far.

 

The catch with Songkran is that the traditional way to celebrate was to sprinkle water on other people.  This has now denigrated into all out water fights.  Some people join in and have a lot of fun, while others try to avoid the mayhem but tend to get drenched anyway.

And, Mike some people sit there with 2 inch hoses and hose down anyone silly enough to walk or drive past them.

 

Its a place I and many other people stay away from at Songkran now.

Figure it is the entire month of April, even when Songkran ends there are still people throwing water for at least a week.  You are going to hate it, I stayed at the Queen Victoria this April and at 500 (5am) there was some asshole blasting music loud as hell for their holiday.  I guarantee you will hate Songkran, most do.  Wait a few weeks and go when you will enjoy yourself.

If you have to go, here is what I suggest, put an inexpensive camera around your neck and be sure your passport is covered in plastic.
