Budweiser to sponsor English FA Cup

Recommended Posts

WEMBLEY, England -- Budweiser has become the first American sponsor of England's FA Cup.

The beer company, which is owned by St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, has secured a three-year deal to sponsor world football's oldest domestic cup competition.

With Budweiser replacing German utility company E.ON as the main sponsor, both of England's cup competitions are now sponsored by beer companies. Carling is the title sponsor of the League Cup.

Manchester City won the FA Cup last month by beating Stoke.

NYON, Switzerland -- The 2013 Champions League final will be played at Wembley, the venue for last month's showcase game.

European soccer's governing body Thursday cited the success of the May 28 game between Manchester United and Barcelona in returning the final to London.

This will be the first time a stadium has held the European Cup final twice in three years. Wembley hosted the final twice in four years between 1968 and 1971.

The 2013 final takes place during the English Football Association's 150th anniversary.

Is that Carling British? Carling is a (really good) fairly popular Canadian beer and an absolutely foul American one. I always thought it was a Canadian company.

I thought that Budweiser was Belgian-owned these days.

I believe it's one of those corporate things - where Budweiser (company and brand) is owned (and brewed) by Anheuser-Busch of the US, but Anheuser-Busch is owned by ... er, Anheuser-Busch Inbev N.V. of Leuven.

I see The Guardian claims, "The beer company, which is owned by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev..." and by "beer company" it means Budweiser. So it may be more (or, heck, less) complicated than I wrote.

Overall, it's Belgian. On a brand basis, it may not be. Beck's still claims to be German, for example.

I thought he was English but can fully understand him wanting folk to think otherwise. :beer Which gets to the point - who did those bastards at the FA bribe to get the Champions League Final again in 2013? The 150th Anniversary thing is bollocks - if that was the case, the final should be played at Hampden. :grin

Now this is an anti (English)FA response I can understand- from a Scotsman. Expected and welcomed, as par for the course - joe take note !

Bud' was the official 'beer' of the last World Cup too. Remember those fit birds in the crowd, wearing orange outfits at a W.C game, to advertise a competitors ale ? Great tactic ! :thumbup

I assume the decision went Wembleys way then? Platini, must have choked on the words.

Don't worry Tom, no slight to Hampden, but the FA made a £1m from the last game and EUAFA loads more. Most expensive ticket to final in Rome 2009 was £125. For the Wembley bash, the cheapest was £150 plus £26 admin- dearest £4,000 with corporate hospitality. Ticket sales close to £50m..... yeah- you're right ! How much did those FA bastards pay EUAFA ? :clueless

One has to wonder Tom, how much the two teams playing in the final, contribute to the actual amount made. Man.U and Barca' was a dream come true, for the FA and EUAFA.

Worldwide appeal to a HUGE audience. I wonder if a Turkish and Croatian teams would have drag in as much dosh ?

With any luck it will be an English team in 2014, to give you somebody to support- the opposition !

I was going to say a Scottish team, but you pulled me up before, about being patronizing,

so....

I have only seen Chelsea and West Ham, play a European game, so you may be right.

If only Brentford had won the Carling Cup. We do sing " We are the Barcelona of the lower league ! " :thumbup
