Importing a car from UK

Recommended Posts

Most past postings have suggested it isn't worth the bother.

Has anyone done this or have any info on costs etc and whether its worth the bother.

To cut a long story short ---- dont bother.

I left a Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign and a Ford Carpri soft-top in Oz due to the crazy import taxes.

I also managed to import a 40' container FULL of personal item into the country with ZERO taxes, legally, so I'm no mug when it comes to working out the ways around the system.

Simple fact is that car import is too hard unless you have the required contacts in customs and even with those it's still difficult as you will get nailed later on with registration/insurance etc etc etc

Errrm you did not "find a way around" the system importing a container full of your shit, its common knowledge that this is allowed.

... and you have no idea what was in the container, or what I did .... so I'll return the favour and call you FULL OF SHIT

There are right ways and wrong ways to do it. There are also some other requirements that can help. I was lucky enough to have a friend put me in contact with a Customs official. You can read all the publiushed BS 'till you go blue in the face, wont help (to paraphrase her words).

Cheers :gulp: Admiral Ken

PS what have you managed to import without any duty other than a suitcase?

Me personally, Ive imported nothing (I left it too late and missed the "Goods must arrive no later than six months after the date on the Work Permit" period so never bothered) However I have numerous friends and work colleagues who have simply followed the correct procedure as outlined by Thai customs and their shipment went smoothly and without any extra "costs".

Not sure why one would need a "Customs Official" to assist, did that person cost you much in the way of a backhander ?

Thanks for saying Iam full of shit in return, maybe next time put down the beer and read what I actually posted.

If you do go ahead and import your car, expect more checks than normal and make sure everything is well above board. All over the news on TV here about them confiscating imported cars, mostly luxury models without the proper paperwork.

"He also said customs officials might also be involved in the illicit business."

In a nutshell that is the issue, not the fact people are declaring the vehicles at a lower value to avoid taxes.
