Married in Thailand

Recommended Posts

I know this is not the best place to ask but I'd imagine a few of the other member here have done it!

I am due to get married in Thailand in December, I am a British citizen and my soon to be wife although she is Thai she is now a Norwegian citizen and at present we both live in the UK.

I have read a lot of conflicting info and hoping someone can help me out.

For the marriage to be legal in the UK what steps should be carried out?

If you get married in Thailand, you need to register the marriage with the UK Embassey, for this you will need all the marriage paper work from the Ampur you get married at. The actual marriage takes about 15 minutes and is not really exciting atall, but it is the legal way to get married. I did it in Bangkok 3 years ago and used a local tout/lawyer to do all the paper work etc after i got my affirmation to marry from the UK Embassey, he then did the letter which i took over to the embassey and i paid about 1900 baht to have it registered and that was that. There is a lot of useful information on the UK embassey website in Bangkok and you can download and print all the forms you may need.

Thanks for the replies, I had already saw something similar the thing that is confusing me is that when I look at the example they list

A) states I am entitled to marry a Thai national, my girl is originally from Thailand but has stayed in Norway for the last 15+ years as she moved there when still a child and in a Norwegian citizen. Do you think this would matter?

Does she still have a Thai passport? if she is still dual nationality then no, it does not matter, you can marry in Thailand. To be sure, i would recommend you see one of the "tout lawyers" who are hanging outside the embassey to make sure

Yes technically speaking I am marrying a Norwegian in Thailand

You may want to check with the Norwegian embassy to see what you would need to do to have a marriage in Thailand recognized in Norway. It can't hurt.
