Cathay Pacific or Etihad?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just got my next leave approved by my boss, so about to book flight.

I won't be flying Eva non-stop this trip as can save about £140 by flying either Cathay Pacific or Etihad, as both have cheap fares at the moment, for my dates.

I would prefer to fly Cathay, as I think a better airline (??), but it adds another 3hr flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok.

From your experience ... which airline would you choose?

Do both have 3-3-3 in economy?

No experience of Cathy plenty with Etihad and I would recommend them to anyone great airline never any problems always on time. Although like elsewhere in the public service the cut backs are creeping in little things but important things like no more hot towels before meals no water before take off these used to come as a matter of course not now.

Hi

Thanks for the replies ....

.... I've farted about tonight trying to decide which to go for, and whether the saving was worth the extra hours each way .... by the time I decided to go for the £444 Cathay flight .... the bloody Cathay sale has finished! Which is a bit annoying as Travelbag, who had that fare, advertised that the sale was on for a couiple more days :angry2 .

Spud - Oman has a good rep and seems to be offering £415 at the mo.

Don't go telling everyone! :cry2 Its business class is exceptional and economy is a very good 34" in a 2-4-2 configuration on an A330. Well worth subscribing to their newsletter as their flights don't appear in many searches.

Hi

Cheers guys ....

Oman did show up on both Kayak or Skyscanner ... but they are £800ish for my dates!

I was going to go for Cathay over Etihad as they have 3-3-3 rather than 3-4-3 seating, which a lot of reviews say is cramped ... and I would think that jamming an extra seat in it would be! Also because of the long flight, as I like to sleep for as much of the flight as possible, and I think that I would have trouble getting back to sleep after a stopover on a half way/half way flight.

If I could have got the cheap Cathay flight ... I would have had it. One of the things that had me farting about last night was the amount of reviews complaining about their seats, but it appears that they have been changed a while back and all is comfortable again, or as comfortable as they can be in economy on a long flight!

Travelbag had Eva cheaper than anything that showed up on Kayak (never really used Skyscanner before ... but they seem better than Kayak), so I booked that today ... £569 for Nov/Dec didn't seem bad .... it's slightly less than I paid for my Aug/Sept flight!

What the hell ... I still could have saved £100 flying Etihad, and probably would have if they had 3-3-3 .... but at least direct I minimise the time spent in the tin can in the sky!

Hi Spud

I`ve flown Cathay a fair few times and been happy with them but have never flown with Etihad so can`t compare the two.

I know what you mean about the extra flight time, when stopped in Hong Kong I`ve generally just gone to grab something to eat quickly, maybe catch up on emails etc and the time actually at the airport went by pretty quick and at least when you touch down at HK, you know you are " nearly there".
