My gf has been having some health issues recently, and I'd like to take her for an M.R.I scan to confirm or rule out some possible causes. Hopefully, everything will be fine but if the scan should confirm my worse fears I could not afford to pay for her care. I would have to get her on health insurance and do it that way (i'm not yet an expat sadly so don't have my own insurance to add her to). My concern is as to whether the scan results could be accessed by the insurance companies, which would in turn lead to her being uninsurable because of the pre existing serious condition. If this is the case maybe an M.R.I in Cambodia or somewhere would get us around the problem? I look forward to your comments guys.

I am of the opinion that any negative diagnosis from the MRI would be on her record and could be uncovered by health insurance companies.

What you are considering is insurance fraud, as you would need to be 'evasive' on the insurance application.

Obviously you need to go ahead with investigation and diagnosis, and for that I hope all is well.

Best I can offer concerning Personal medical records is as follows:

http://bma.org.uk/practical-support-at-work/ethics/confidentiality-and-health-records

Scroll down to "disclosing data for secondary purposes"

Also it mentions further down that any information given to insurers needs your consent, apparently.

However, bear in mind mate that if you go to a private sector company to get an MRI (as advertised in the UK, healthscreen for example ) they are bound by different rules and regulations, part of which, as I'm led to understand it is that you effectively give them permission to share the results with 3rd parties. Jacko is right.

If you're concerned about cancer, then a blood test usually gives indicators, no need for an MRI. Cheaper and less invasive, as some people get scared of having scans due to the type of machinery used, believe it or not.

Consider also that as Jacko says, of you're aware of a pre exsisting condition then the insurance will be void.

My advice? Take out health insurance anyway, before you have any kind of blood screen or scans, then you can fill out the form truthfully as you are "not aware" of any pre exsisting conditions.

I hope all is well. Might be worth checking if your Mrs is anaemic as it tends to be a common trait in Asians, along with some vitamin deficiencies which to us, ring alarm bells. Hepatitis is a fucker as well. My good mate (filipino) died of liver cancer a few years back, turned out after the autopsy he had Hepa B but was unaware, he just felt shit all the time and thought it was normal.

A full blood workup at a private clinic would be the first step. Get them to screen for everything from Malaria to pregnancy to Hepa A,B & C.

check your PM's
