Displayed prices are for multiple nights. Check the site for price per night. I see hostels starting at 200b/day and hotels from 500b/day on agoda.

A disturbing new trend..new to me at least

Was this happening before or after midnight?

I’m in town for Chinese New Year and if there is this sort of behaviour going on I may well decide to have an early night.

What gives anyone the right to do this to a stranger?

It started about 11:30 pm and went on for hours after midnight.

FLB always had spray cans to use just at midnight, and that was it. No more, no strangers, just a minute at most.

What I saw last night, and what Dave says is normal and to be expected was way beyond anything I've seen in a decade of New Year's Eves on Walking Street.

These are a couple of years back.

From memory it slows down about 2-3 am.

First one is Hot Tuna and the second Blues Factory.

Are you condoning what those guys pictured in the OP and later video were doing?

Normally no but WS on New Years for me this is normal and I'd expect it so I just go with the flow, I wouldn't just stand there like they were spraying passers-by at random I'd be sitting round a table with maybe 10 others spraying each other.

I say retaliate Songkran fashion.

You get sprayed with string-foam in the face, you get a bucket of iced water from the FLB to chuck over the perpetrator . Much less fun for him on a 20 degC January night than an April one.

I vote for string-foam at Songkran instead of the water too.

This is why between x mas and new years i avoid all high traffic tourist areas. Had a nice new years at home. Thai bbq, plenty of beer, we went through 3 bottles of tequila and had a nice fireworks show

i've seen that happen.

davethailand, I take your advice and informed opinion very seriously since you are an acknowledged perpetrator of this behavior and its chief apologist :

However, just because it happens, it has been happening, and even, seemingly sane and well-behaved individuals have participated in it, doesn't prevent those of us who say it detracts from the Pattaya experience and the NYE festivities from calling it rude, childish, and inconsiderate behavior engaged in by groups of wannabe thugs.

Anyone who does it should get a slap from someone who is capable of following through on that, but they'd best be in a bigger, tougher group, I suppose.

The one occasion I speak of was actually one of our group spraying a guy who seemed to enjoy it but then threw 3 or 4 punches landing straight on the chin of the sprayer (who we both know). He then grabbed the guy who managed to run off leaving his shirt behind.

I turned my back literally on the incident as it was spoiling an enjoyable night.

The sprayer (again who we know) deserved what he got but I'm very pleased that the other guy got away.

I'd say there's a time for spraying string or foam..once the clock strikes midnight, up to a short time after. That's expected, acceptable, and in the holiday spirit.

It's just like Songkran where the assholes think spraying water all night is acceptable because they're protected by their mates. Sundown should be the stopping time, save for one night.

Same thing to me when the spraying continues into the next hours after midnight.

Agree for songkran and getting messy with string. On the main night only otherwise keep it between mates.

No problem with doing it all night if it's kept between mates, but as you can see from the photos and video I posted, these characters were out of line, even by your more permissive accepting definition of "just a bit of fun", wouldn't you agree?

I can't say its not for fun because I've done it but in the right crowd and time not just at any time.

Spraying into someone's ear or eye whilst walking past is I agree not really funny but thats what happens on nights like this, I suppose I've learnt to just bite my lip and walk on although I am guilty of calling people names. Wouldn't slap anyone though, you never know who your slapping.

It can be a nice distinction …...that fine line between, 'making merry' and 'malice,' but when you see 'making merry' being used to disguise 'malice'……. instinctively, (like MM here) you know it………and are repulsed and disgusted by the cowardly advantage being taken.

We didn't have the silly string this year and everyone was complaining. It was a lot easier to clean up though.

LOL...don't blame them..the stuff is perfect in those few moments after Auld Lang Syne or whatever is playing, the fireworks are going off, the champagne is being drunk, and perfect strangers are hugging....

It's out of place outside of that short time.

Naturally, the Thais cater to the childish idiots who want to carry on by spraying passers by on the streets till all hours. Why not? They can buy a box of spray for 25 baht each and sell them for 50+ baht each all night to the drunken assholes :P

I'm not saying it is right but would probably just go with the flow for NYE. A bit of foam for 1 night is surely preferable than being drenched with icy water for about a week round songkran?

I have made a mental note to come to where ever you are next NYE and make sure you are suitably covered
