Same thing in France costs 7€ = 280 bht approx. ..... French oysters there or local Thai ones?

I was in Nang Nual a few days ago, and the Oysters were 125 Baht each there, so the price quoted including plonk, is in relativity not too bad. It seems that Oysters and the Rock Lobsters that I like, have joined the likes of large prawns for big price hoiks recently.

Strange how Oysters changed from "peasant food" of the 19th century, to be bunged in meat pies to flesh out the absence of more expensive meats and other pauper dishes, to the status that they have today!

If they are as you claim fresh oysters from France , then that's a very very good price for this town .

Some thoughts about the oysters... many years ago in a 5+ star french restaurant in Paris the guy invited us for the dinner offered me as the star of the 8 floor sea food plate including the fine french crabs, moules in garlic sauce, fish filets, lobsters etc... the fine french oysters... they were still living, dropping the lemon juice they still moved... I tried only one and swore for myself: I will never eat the same mucus in my life... However some girls encouraged me to try the thai version: with the spicy sauce and the fried onion pieces.... and it became one of my favourite... I still eat it on the beach ... 50 baht a dozen...

If kept cool and moist, oysters survive for a good while outside the water. They only "die" when opened.

Flo and I will never forget picking up our cat from Jeddah airport "live animal imports" cargo office when we bumped into a French restaurateur bringing in a palette of oysters (from Bouzigues) for "late December/early January". One of the uniformed guards asked him if his animals were alright so he pulled out his oyster knife, ate one, and said "yes, fine, delicious". The look on the guard's face was priceless - he went down the corridor and gestured to his mate "he just ATE one of his animals!"
