11may04 US Today business section had an article on how all six us airlines have increased the number of international fights to pre- 9/11 numbers. although they are seeing increased travel volume internationaly they plan on raising fares because these are there only profitable routes as they are losing money on all domestic flights trying to compete with southwest and the other discount airlines. airline insiders suggest that people need to travel internationaly and the options are limited so fares are at a premium and will go up for the summer travel season.

The big difference is, many families are driving those large SUV's that get about 15 miles to a gallon and will drive a much greater distance for their holiday.
