Oh - one more thing...avoid the seats without seats directly in front of you. If you do your personal video monitor will be not be eye level (like those with seats directly in front of them) but will be attached to the arm of your seat forcing you to look down

I have never sat in one of the seats with no one in front of you, but I think that having the video come out of the armrest would be a reasonable trade off for the extra leg room.

Unless you are 6' 3" or more you probably won't need the room - I am 6' 1" and can stretch out full or sit with my legs crossed ankle to knee without crowding length or width

Seat selection go for the ones as close to the front as possible - many have no center seats making for extra wide isles. Plus this area of the plane in the most quiet (that is why they put first class their for most other non 747 planes) It is amazing the difference between the first 6-8 rows and the rest of the plane - check it out next time you're flying. Hardly needed my noise canceling headphones.

Got to disagree with you. The baby basinets are located at row 20 next to the forward bulkhead in Evergreen Deluxe and are normally allocated to families with infants. Rows 20-22 should be avoided unless you enjoy the sounds of crying babies.

 

Several other of the "favoured seats" (Row 26 and the exit seats on Row 27) are only allocated at the airport and priority is normally given to Gold and Silver Card members of their FF programme. They can, however, be put "on request". Seats 27 D and G are normally the only two seats with extra legroom that are available for free allocation at the time of reservation.

 

IMO having the removable PTV is a bonus as you don't have to keep adjusting it when the passenger in front reclines their seat.

I will be going Eva evergreen deluxe in October and as I understand it,

Full 747-4 Tu, Th, Sa and Combi Su and Wed.

When I went out in February on a Saturday it was a 368 seat 744, do I take it that any of the variants may be used on LHR-BKK?

I prefer the seat layout on the Combi, I have all the seat plans printed out but the Full Pax 744 doesn't appear to have any obvious 'better' seats, anyone disagree?

Even the girl on the desk at LHR didn't know which plane it was, she said I give you 27C next to exit, it was in fact next to bulkhead and (babies).

The obvious answer is to go Combi both ways and that is something I am considering.

The full pax 380 and 386 seat configurations are identical to the combi in the first two sections i.e. from the nose to the front door and from the front door to the front galley. However, you are correct in that any of the full pax configurations can be used on the LHR route and so any pre-assigned seat allocation becomes a bit of a lottery. I would agree that going on the "combi days" makes sense if you are flexible in your planning. IMHO the uncertainty of the EVA seat configuration from LHR makes the China Airlines option via AMS a better bet for the northern-based guys who have to make a connecting flight to LHR anyway (and the stewardesses are cuter).

I have just checked out China Airlines with Ours Travel and it is only £400 return from BHX in October, however I cannot find a Dynasty price.

 

Can you recommend a good site which shows Dynasty fares at a good rate?

finally, is Dynasty a better product than Evergreen DeLuxe?

The Dynasty upgrade is the full business class product less the baggage allowance and mileage accumulation i.e. business class food and service, lounge access at Amsterdam and Bangkok and business class seating but only 20 kgs baggage and economy mileage accumulation..

The total cost incl the Dynasty upgrade is approx UKP 750-760 from the UK regional airports on KLM UK.

 

Seating can be allocated 90 days in advance of travel through China Airlines London Office (they are particularly helpful with any queries) on 0207 436 9001. There are two variants of the 747 that they use, however, in both cases the best seats are in row 10. The seating maps are below:

Dynasty does some very good, the fare is excellent for business, still not sure if I'll go for it or not.

On Row 10 window, the emergency slide doesn't get in your way does it like Eva evergreen 27A and K.

I have just checked out the weather channel and October is the wettest month of the year in Pattaya so I may delay till November, although the Hotels cost a little more.

Not as much as Evergreen or economy. From what I recall, you have floor mounted bins running the length of the upper cabin (for sticking reading materials, blankets, shoes etc) so the seats are offset into the cabin a bit more rather than flush against the fuselage.

I book EVA evergreen deluxe from LAX for November. The price was about $850 - just slightly more then I could find most other airlines economy flights. Last trip I took Cathy Pacific economy and even though it is a great airline, economy for that long of a flight is just too hard on my old body!

 

Actually I first heard about EVA evergreen on this board and decided to take the advice of the posters - glad to read so many good comments. Don't mind the extra money for the extra comfort and leg room. Being a short fella, I should be able to curl up like a mutt and get some sleep!

Just got called yesterday by EVA with an equipment change. Chose seat 27d on 747 Combi. Now they switched to 747 400 passenger, and put me in 29d. I wish they would get rid of those 400s, or make 1st class into Premium Laurel class. They never fill up the 1st class area, and 27d aboard the combi would have allowed me PLENTY of extra leg room, because there's no seat in front of it.

Not sure Gus, but they do intend to replace all 747s with 777s.

I never understand airline prices. LA is about 50% further from Bangkok than London is, but the prices are almost always cheaper. And from airline pricing, I would assume the Atlantic is bigger than the Pacific.

The official Eva Air site quotes around £1,300 or $2000 for LHR-BKK, I believe that the same site quotes a lot less for USA-LOS for Evergreen deluxe.

 

Sometimes I think about flying with Virgin to LAX then Eva to BKK, bloody long way to go, although it will boost my FF miles
