Golfers face new hazard - bullets

From correspondents in Bangkok

July 26, 2004

FORGET water hazards and sandtraps, health hazards are the main concern for unfortunate golfers at a course in Thailand who are dodging stray bullets from a nearby shooting range, an official said.

Retrieving an errant tee-shot has become a no-no on the 15th hole at the Field Marshall Plaek Golf Course, which abuts a shooting range in Lopburi province where police officers are known to practice their marksmanship.

"We have seen bullets glancing off from somewhere and falling on our golf course," course manager Colonel Bavornrat Maitreeprasat told AFP.

Several golfers have expressed their fears about the hazardous conditions but for many the risk of getting hit by a bullet is not enough to keep them from playing out a full 18-hole round, Bavornrat said.

"It's nothing to worry about because no one has been hurt," he said. "The 15th hole is nearest the shooting range and we hardly hear any shots, but a few golfers get scared."

The course is located on a Thai military base, and army officials have ordered the shooting range to strictly control its gunners and use low-calibre weapons.

It doesn't seem to mention the hazard to brownshirts form errant golf balls.

If they saw my duff hook they'd think twice about wandering out on their range!

Doubt whether anyone's hook can be any worse than mine was at it's worst. :eyecrazy

Playing in a stiff left to right wind - maybe 30mph or more (?)I had to aim along the edge of the gorse bushes on the RIGHT hand side of the fairway and still managed to hook the ball out of bounds. Playing in the opposite direction, I was aiming even further over the gorse on the right hand side of the fairway and on a very wide fairway still went out of bounds on the left. I reckon that the ball must have moved some 70 - 80 yards from right to left in mid air.

Alan

Sounds like we should have a game together.....we'd double the chances of locating our lost balls.

Of course, there are better ways to lose your balls once you get to Pty.
