Thai golfing vacation - question

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if I wanted to spend 3 months in the Pattaya area at one of the places that cater to golfers and was to play 1 round a day 5 days a week .... how much would that cost me.

Also are these golfer friendly hotels also TG friendly?

Any information would be appreciated. I'm planning on heading back to LoS in Oct or Nov and want to spend 3-6 months there. Sounds like a good time to work on the ole game.

Do any of the courses require Caddy/Cart? If you have a cart do you still need a caddy? If I walked 9holes then wanted a Caddy/Cart would that typically be pro-rated.

I know those questions seem like the answer would be pretty obvious but I"m trying to think like a Thai.

Does anyone know if they offer monthly or longer period of time flat fees for courses?

If you only plan on playing on the "Sports Days", do you need a discount card to get the reduced rate? Also is the cost of a cart, per cart or per person?

You must have the PSC card to get the discount on Sports Day. You need to check the prices for the individual courses for the buggy charges. I think some of them charge per buggy and some per golfer. The Thai Golf Paradise link that Hub has given you is the best one for information about golf in Thailand.

The best way to enjoy your golf is to hook up with the groups that Hub has mentioned. Both the Haven and Lewinskiis are better suited for the serious golfer. You will be welcome in either group if you play off 24 or less. If you want a less competitive golf day, I would suggest hooking up with the guys who play out of Sugar Shack on Soi Pattayland 2.

I organise the Ride Her Cup for the FLB Bar in November - please see the post in this section regarding this year's event. I will also be organising some more golf days for the FLB boardies who are in town between 1st and 20th November. Once I have a response on entries for the RideHer, I will be in touch with some suggestions. One idea I have is to see if many people are interested in a 2 or 3 day trip to Hua Hin where there are some great courses or maybe Kanchanaburi to combine some golf with a trip to the River Kwai. At the very least, I will try to set up some more golf days in the Pattaya area for the FLB gang.

You wont want to golf anywhere else in the world after you have played in Thailand. A day out will rarely cost you more than Bht 2000 with the exception of Laem Chabang and the sports days are great value.

I hope we will meet up in November.

Cheers

FYI.....

SPORTS DAYS

I keep in contact with a girl in the Sales and Marketing Dept. at Laem Chabang. She sent me an email the other day saying that during the month of October they will have Sports Day on Tuesday AND Thursday and the cost is ONLY 750baht!! No discount card required. That is a great deal considering the regular rate is 2500baht.

DISCOUNT CARDS

Unless I misunderstood, I didn't think you needed a discount card to get the cheap price on Sports Day. Anytime I played on a Sports Day I never had to show my discount card.

CADDIES

As for the caddies.....I have always had good experiences with them. They will joke and play around with you if you're not too serious (throwing clubs, swearing, etc...). However, they are a little more reserved if there is a Thai playing in the group. My favorite caddie was from Laem Chabang.....#269. Unfortunately, her mother got sick and she had to move back up North. She did, however, come and stay with me for a week in Bangkok :D :D .

Would love to play in the Rideher Cup but I have to work during the week and can't get away 2guns B)

Cheers.....gp :D

GP2002

That's great news about 2 sports days a week at Laem Chabang. Thanks for the info.

Sorry you can't make the RideHer.

Thanks for the tips, guys. It looks as though I'd be best starting off with the Sugar Shack as I don't think I'm quite at the 24 handicap level. Not having played for about 25 years, I think that even a handicap of 36 might still be too low! :beer

Just one word of warning about playing with the Sugar Shack crew, and this goes for many of the so-called 'Social Clubs' in town.

The guy who runs the show, Brian, is a fast play freak who literally runs from the van to the locker, and then to the first tee so as not to get stuck behind those 'bloody Asians.'

Meanwhile, any guy new to the course is left to sort out gloves, balls, payment, lockers, etc. himself.

Instead of turning up cold one morning, I recommend hanging out at the Shack for a few beers in the arvo on a Mon, Wed. Fri and shoot the shit with the golfers after they return. Find some blokes you get along with and ask to play a round with them.

Tell them you're new to the scene and they'll probably hold your hand and you'll have a great day.
