My wife is saving her money to build a house in the Nakonsawan area. She has had her family check around for prices. She thinks she can build the house she wants, 3 bedrooms, 2 story, tile roof, tile through-out.... for about 500,000 bhat. She is working here in the US and wants a nice house. If you get too far away from the style that the builders are used to I think your costs can go way up. Ps I told her if she does not have a sit down toilet and hot shower I will stay in Pattaya and she can come visit me Jim

I saw her interviewed on Tv. She said she was having fun and got carried away. She still seemed very happy to be a medal winner. Youthful exuberance I guess. Bye the way, How old were you when you won your first Gold medal? Jim

A friend just returned from Thailand. He attended the Expats meeting and said they were talking about insurance. He said insurance was difficult or impossible to get when you are over 65. Can anyone confirm or deny? Jim

I am more than 1/2 way through the lessons that rosetta stone has on level 1. It works pretty well for me. I add a few lessons and then go back to review. The lessons use the words from previous lessons. It is kind of a pain sometimes because you dont know what they are talking. They show 4 photos and say a word or phrase and you select the one that fits. I have tried others that I didn't like as well. Like cybers1b recommended http://www.learningthai.com is a good site. Try read with Manee under the top ten. Good luck Jim

Anyone have any information about a bar just off South Pattaya, and past 3rd road that is (or was) named Margaritaville? My friend went ther a few times and was wondering if they were still in business. He will be back next month and would like to go again. Thanks Jim

Thanks guys, 1 friend already has reservations at Nana. the other is flying into BKK and then to Vietnam the next day. He will be flying back to Bkk with about 16 hour between flights and we were wondering if he would be closer to Pattaya than Don Muang. I guess he will just have to find something to do in Bangkok. I told him there is a bookstore near Nana hotel, by the 7-11, if he gets too bored! Jim

Hi everyone I have a friend flying into Thailand on Feb 6 and another coming Feb 17. Does anyone know if they will be using the Suvarnabhumi Airport or will they be flying into Don Muang? I know that Suvarnabhumi Airport had a completion date at the end of 2004, but I have not heard if they are open yet. thanks Jim

BK: Last year I flew 50,000 miles with united so I am at what they call the "premier Exec" level. I fly from Orlando Florida. Flight Miles: 20,912 Bonus miles: 20,912 Book on-line: 1,000 ---------- 42,824 I also get 8 500 mile upgrades that convert to miles if not used in 1 year. Unused upgrades: 2,000 My total mile for this trip that I paid $860 44, 824 Saver awards to Bkk are 60,000 miles (limited availability) Standard award 100,000 (when they have any seat available) On the saver award I can fly 3 and get 2 free! Not to bad if you’re going to be flying anyway. I can also reserve economy plus seats (extra legroom and just enough recline that your head does not flop around for 10 hours when you try to sleep after partying for 2 weeks). I can also pre-book the Exit row seats, shorter check-in lines, seating priority (which is nice because you get to the overhead bins before the other guys), and priority tags on luggage (you can check 3 instead of 2 also) My bag was the 3rd off of the plane in BKK (not bad for a 747). Pretty good perks for taking flights I was going to take anyway. Jim

Andy, It looks like they may have the ticket prices sorted out on United.com now. For a week the only fares I could find were over $1100 and finally today (after sending a few e-mails) I see they have them listed again in the $850 range. Jim
-
Ian, I am flying with United. I have so many miles now that I am able to book the economy plus seats for the lowest price and reserve the exit rows when I book. I was looking at North West when I started but just missed thier "e fares" and the cheapest I could find after that was United. From Orlando the fares through Europe are about 3 times the price as going through either Chicago or the west coast. My tickets are usually in the $850 range while anything that i have seen through Europe are over $2000. It is still over 10,000 miles either way I think. Jim

Andy, I looked at a flight from Orlando Fla. last night when I got home (what else would you do after flying 24 hours comeing back from Pattaya!) and the price was $833, today I am having the same problem as you. The V class fares are not showing up. I had this same problem in early December and after a couple of days they showed up again. I think maybe the problem is with the website and not the fares. Maybe you can call united and ask for the V class fare or wait a couple of days. I do not think they have sold out, at least I hope they haven't. Jim

Mark: Thanks for that tip, I told the honey that I was with last trip that I wanted a t-shirt with mai ao ( not want) written on it! In Thai of course only the board won't show Thai script (or I can't read it on my computer when I preview it!). Torrenova: My friend has his heart set on taking a train trip so I will take along my camera and a TG to keep myself entertained. Boy that sucks don't it, traveling by train through Thailand, drinking beer and playing with a TG, and to think I could be at work (sorry for the use of the 4 letter word on the open section Pete). The things we do for friends! Roppongi: What is the set up in the 1st class as far as seating goes? I have seen a photo of the seating in the 2nd class. What do you think the possibility of getting 2 compartments next to each other? Like I said I am traveling with a friend but will likely take along a TG for entertainment. Is there room for 4 people in a compartment to visit, play cards,connect4....? If you have any photos I would like to see them. Thanks everyone Jim
-
Upena, Thanks for the info, I had not seen the first site before. Do you have any first hand experiance traveling on the trains in Thailand? I have done the google search thing but do not seem to be able to find many photos or first hand travel experiance listed. 1 site the author said that they had good food cooked on-board and brought to thier room. Thanks Jim

Hi all, I am thinking about taking a train trip to Chiang Mai from Bangkok on my next trip. I will be traveling with a friend (and maybe my TG). My friend retired from the railroad here and still likes train travel. What would be better to take the day trip and see the country side (and then get a room for the night) or take the night trip and see a little before night and in the morning. Do they have dining cars on the train or do you have to take along food? The main reason to take the train is to see the sights, if any on the way to Chiang Mai. I will still get the "Air-Conditioned sleeper car". Would you reccomend the first class over the second? We will fly back ( 1hr 10 min!). I would like very much to see any photos that anyone may have of the train/ sleeper berths/ scenery or anything else interesting about the trip. Thank-you Jim

I have read about this on a forum claaed "Flyer Talk" Here is the thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTM...TML/024105.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Quote ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "PUNKI" "I just talked with an MP Supervisor who confirmed that: 1. The 10,000 qualifying miles can be in any booking class. 2. As soon as you fly 10,000 miles the bonus starts kicking in on all future flights. So if you flew 10,000 miles by January 2, all the rest of your January flights would count. 3. Triple miles, means that the trip will earn 3 times your actual flight miles, plus whatever other bonus to which you are entitled. Therefore, a 1,000 trip for a 1k would earn 4,000 miles. Of course, MP interpretations have been know to be revised, but this is what they are saying today. " (MP= Milage Plus) I hope that my V class ticket will qualify, Time will tell I guess. If not don't tell my boss, He is letting me go 2 weeks early to take advantage of this fine offer! Jim

quote:From United Airlines web-site -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Earn triple miles Fly 10,000 paid, qualifying miles between January 1 and January 31, 2004. You'll then earn triple bonus miles on future paid qualifying flights, through March 31, 2004*. or Earn double miles Fly 10,000 paid, qualifying miles between January 1 and February 29, 2004. You'll then earn double bonus miles on future paid qualifying flights, through March 31, 2004*. or Earn 5,000 bonus miles Fly 10,000 paid, qualifying miles between January 1 and March 31, 2004, and you'll receive 5,000 bonus miles. * Excludes W, S and T booking classes for Mileage Plus bonus. I am flying from BKK on Janurary 11 so I will have the 10,000 miles to qualify. I was planning a trip in April but if I move it up 2 weeks I can get 60,000 bonus miles! That is a free trip! Not counting the actual miles and the bonus for elite status on United. Total is a little over 100,000 miles = a free business class ticket! Jim

I saw the shower rooms last time through Narita but didn't use them. This time coming in from SFO it looks like I will have 3 hours between flights so I will give it a try. Has anyone tried the "Day rooms"? For $13 it might be better than sitting around the waiting room on those oh so comfortable seats! I was also happy to see that they take US money , last time I went to the exchange, spent a little and left the rest in the dresser at my hotel in Pattaya. Next year I will be able to use the United Airlines lounge (not the first class I'm too cheap for that!) but after flying 50,000 miles this year I can use the "star gold" lounge. Has anyone tried it and do they have showers? Thanks Jim

Roppongi Do you mean the Roof Garden Inn? Maybe there is a roof top inn (what the heck do I know), I'm not sure but I know the roof garden is near the Sugar Hut. Lookn4Domi, If you can find a place in Pattaya you may be better off. From what I have read (nope haven't been for New Years yet), It is not too hard getting to walking street in the EARLY evening but getting back can be a real pain. Good Luck Jim

IWAN, Looks to me like the infamous SF Dude will be in town when you arrive. I was fortunate enough to be led astray on my first night on the town by SF Dude, Mikey, and Mark. A great bunch of guys. But be careful, what these other guys are not telling you is that it can (and most likely will) become habit forming! I will be making my 3rd trip Dec 30th for New Years. Seriously though go to the FLB and try to hook up with some guys who are going on a prowl. But be warned you may be booking your next trip as soon as you get back home! Jim
