Look"s like the Phillippines will be the New retire Heaven
RWB replied to mrstein's topic in Expat Issues
What is safe? I don't have weapons when I am in LOS, I do in USA. Then again, I don't live in LOS, yet. -
If you had to move from Thailand where would you go and why?
RWB replied to sinkorswim's topic in Expat Issues
I wouldn't have any problem living in Cambo. My move to SE Asia is still about 3 years away and there are many things to consider. Although LOS has always been my first choice, Cambo has always been right there. Cheaper and in many ways more friendly. Just don't step off the trail, you might go boom. -

I wouldn't have a problem in Snookyville. I finish work in about 3 years and I am out of the US of A. SE Asia will be my home. If it isn't LOS it will be Cambo, 2nd choice and really wouldn't mind it being 1st. -
I work for a local gov't agency with good coverage here in the states. We just received a brochure from a company associated with our group life ins. that will cover us when we are over 100 miles from home. This includes Thialand. I plan on talking with a representitive about the coverage because some of the brochure is rather vague. It also covers attorneys, bail, and apparently mercs to get you out of a country when the shit hits the fan, all this at no cost. Seriously, it really does cover a lot of contingencies beyond just medical. This thread and that brochure got me off my ass and I fi

One thing I have not seen is, actually a couple, health insurance, and retirement. I know you are still young and so may not even have SS when you're 100 or whatever age "they" set for collecting but SS is still a consideration. What about retirement income? Although it may not always seem possible, you might actually live to a ripe old age and retire, or want to retire. Health insurance IMO is a necessity. Will you have to pay for it or will it be part of a retirement package? What kind of benefits package does the Singapore company have compared to your present job? Just a few items to consi

Only flown China Air once, but after my next trip I will have burned most of my ff miles on NWA and will be flying either China or Eva more than likely. I found my flight on China comfortable, good departure and arrival times, food better than NWA and much better eye candy with the flight attendents. I flew cattle class. Just getting to LOS in the middle of the day instead of midnite is worth the change. NWA probably does have a better ff program.

No bar or bargirl discussion here. I go every xmas and newyr. Plenty to do, post in member section you will get your answer.

Interesting and very relevant topic. The VA will usually screw you every chance they get even here in the states. I was getting free care, agent orange related, when all of a sudden the VA decided I had too much money and wanted back pay. My divorce bankruptcy screwed them. I never went back for the disability I am entitled to. The story of my best friend, passed from agent orange, is a bit too long to tell, but it is a horror story about the VA. They reflect the present regime. As far as medicare, well, who knows what will happen there. Don't count on your gov't keeping any promises they made

Owen, some good points. My move will have finality. I have no desire to return to the states, not even to die(same reason I won't go to VA - although I do have a perverted desire to cost the gov't all I can). The loss of usa insurance would be a bit of a problem(mine is supposed to continue after retirement) and the fact the medicare refuses to pay for what you have already paid for just pisses the shit out of me. One more reason I leave this country. Thai insurance is (so far) relativly cheap. One must plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Still a few years before I move, but already I am getting rid of "stuff"(Huricanne Rita helped). I will probably bring over some very personal stuff-ie photos of friends, children and some favorite clothes(give me a break ). I have 100's books to either sell or give away. Furniture that nobody wants. My Vietnam and Vietnam Veterans Against the War "stuff" will go to the archives at Texas Tech. Some of my weapons I can sell, some, esp the ones I built or modified(and used well) will stay with my son. My daughter who refuses to speak with me for kicking her fat, mean, bitch, man hating, thief,

Looking for 2 month rental..Cheap...
RWB replied to hapo's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Looking to save a little bht this dec/jan the Metro looks good, but I see 19,500 not 12,000. I have been staying at Sandy Spring and find it a good place, but I kinda want to get away from the memories of last dec/jan lady. I do like the location, easy walking distance even to soi 8, although I keep finding myself on Walking Street. -
This doesn't surprise me at all. Several of our BM's have been predicting this for some time. I got a hint of the Thai feeling a few months ago when chatting with a lady Thai on the net. She was very well ecucated, traveled, not young. She had mentioned several times in conversation about the "taking" of Thai land by farangs. I was not really sure what she meant at the time, but I believe I understand much more now. There is evidently much resentment about farangs being able to afford the homes and land that most Thais cannot even dream about. I saw this same type situation in norther

I went into my divorce expecting to walk away with just about everything(I had paid off all of her medical bills, the car, that she had not been making full payments on, etc, etc), after all none of it was hers to start with. WRONG!!!!!! The first clue was when the judge said "I don't care if you think your inherintence is yours, as far as I am concered it is community property". If(yea I know) I had known Thailand then I would have been on the next plane out with my 1/4milusd. I had to file bankruptcy to stop the blood letting. Hide your money, and run Forest, run!

LilWilly, my thoughts exactly. I can do the 1000usd a month in a yr or so, but I won't even begin to think of the move until at least 2000usd a month. I have lived paycheck to paycheck and worried about how to feed my children too many times to end my life wondering if I have enough $$ to eat, much less enough $$ to get some pussy(if you can't fuck, why eat). Soi7, 500usd has to be a drafting error, but please don't tell us 5,000usd.

I have a friend that flew Eva and liked it. I have never flown Eva, but usually see cheap flights with good flight times compared to NW. I did fly China once when nothing available in NW was anywhere near the price of China. I really liked the flight, comfortable(for cattle class), good food and good service. The one killer is no preflight seat choice, only 1st come 1st serve, not good, not good. Probably a deal killer for me.

Thanks for the info. I know that this subject gets brought up over and over again, but it seems that it is always useful. I am one of those poor souls that will have to work to age 65. My retirement plans went out the window a couple of weeks ago when I discovered that the "1st option" clause in my retirement plan didn't mean "my" 1st option. It seems that I will be able to retire Dec '07, because of over 60 age and service. Ordinarly the 1st option is the number 75, arrived at by age and years of service. Dec. '07 sounds great, but the money will not be there for another 3 years later, i

Great, really great, thanks for the laugh.

Largest crowds I have seen in my few trips to LOS at xmas/nyrs. More family type people than I had seen and they were in Bkk also. I think many were planning on going to Phuket until the "big wave". Crowded, more expensive and I wouldn't miss it. I don't think I could stand another xmas/nyrs in SE Texas. See you in FLB.

suitcase, good idea, I think it was tried before and too late to get the word out and enough people to believe. There are many legitiment reasons for a rise in fuel prices, but the real reason that they are so high is the oil companies are making hugh profits and their friends in Washington DCsupport them. Buy your tickets now. Just saw on ABC news, expect 15 cent rise in price by the end of the week.

You can bet the rigs in the Gulf are all shut down and if the rigs and pipeline infrastructure are damaged in New Orleans/Gulf the price we have had to put up with will seem like nothing. The bouys were reporting 15+ foot waves early today and expect to see them go higher. The interstate is packed with people coming west to here and some farther. The price droped a few cents and I filled up. Expect the price to go up by tommorow due to the expected shortage. My ticket for Dec/Jan paid for.

I understand one of the reasons for his success is an enlarged heart. Half again the normal size. His "recovery time" is significantly shorter than most due to the large size. I believe he was born with it. One thing for sure, it does take a lot of "heart" to win in that sport.

I'm sitting on 85,000 ff miles, haven't been able to find a decent price, a ff flight for less than 120,000 and no cash and miles flights. NWA 1000usd above most others, and their flight attendents are old and ugly. While I think the unions have shot themselves in the foot many times, I always have been and always will be union. Many people today don't have a clue about the sacrifices made by the workers years ago that enable them to have what they have today. Saddly they are letting those sacrifices go for naught. My dad was railroad man for many yrs and even after being in mngt position

agree on NWA, I'll just have to let my frequent fly miles sit for now. I would consider an extra 100usd or so for the miles at this point, but can't even find a miles flight. Paying 600 or more, no way, I don't have the $. Looks like China Air for me. The conections out of Houston always cost a little more, but NWA just gone too far. Damn, it doesn't do any good to get to LOS with no $$ to spend.

I think the flight from Japan to BKK was All Nipon. Too lazy to look it up right now, but the flights from Japan to BKK not AA

2 great reasons to fly China air - sexy flight attendents and all the beer you want! I might be sold .
