Second/Third year University students. They came from all sorts of social classes/backgrounds (mainly from southern Thailand) - from the daughters of rubber tappers, to some who don't want for a bob or two. I've often been asked by Thai guys why farangs choose to go with the girls they do go with. They simply can't get their heads round it. We've all read the comments at some point or another, Thais are this, Thais are that. So in Snopes style, what are the popular myths, and do they have any basis in fact or are they just establishing some sort of superior mentality in the writers' minds. Add to the list, but remember to add your Pattaya Snopes assessment whether there is some truth behind the comments, or comment on those Number 1 All Thai girls hate Thai men/are looking for a farang husband. False (At least in the south of Thailand). So why do so many guys who are here on extended visas rent a prostitute to provide companionship? That's always the first question that springs to my mind when I read that claim for the umpteenth time. I had cause to be interviewing some (40) TGs a while back about Thai and western culture and the questions were asked whether they would consider dating/marrying a westerner. A whopping 7.5% answered in the affirmative. When pushed and asked if they would prefer dating/marrying a westerner, the Yes vote dropped to one. My own (personal) observations are that pre-Thaksin lots of girls saw farangs as an escape from poverty, but that doesn't hold the same weight nowadays and the overwhelming number of TGs prefer to remain in Thailand as part of a traditional Thai family.

It's also a well-known pickpocket's paradise ... take extra care of your belongings.

No. The rates that have been passed are "ceilings" that allow for increases over the next 10-15 years without having to pass a new law/regulation every year to increase the lawful amount of duty that can be collected.

There's also the small matter of another 400 quid 'tax' to consider. BA's site is showing the cheapest current price as being 16K Baht before tax and charges. That translates to 36K Baht once the 'extras' have been added. Next April is even more expensive.

I think that was exactly the point he was making. Prices go up (to whatever the market will tolerate) for no justifiable reason other than the punter is getting more Baht for his GBP, USD, EUR, or whatever.
