Top 3 things to do in Pattaya
Eric_Olthwaite replied to marketinsider's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Great question. (1) Buy a load of sweets and visit the orphanage. Laugh like a kid, cry like a baby, and leave with a head full of crazy swirling emotions; a bit like LOS itself. Thai girls love it, too. (2) Wrap myself around an unfeasibly large breakfast at the Lek, people-watch, feel jealous of the newbies to Pattaya, fall in love with yet another tiny, shy waitress with a "trainee" badge. (3) Go to Wong Amat beach, eat, drink, eat, drink, sleep, read a good book, look at my watch and think about what I'd be doing if I was at work, drink, eat, wonder why anyone should want to go -
Domestic Flight Security Regulations.
Eric_Olthwaite replied to Eric_Olthwaite's topic in Airline Discussion
Nidnoyham, sounds like a sensible idea, and I'll certainly take a photocopy around with me next time. Been to LOS so many times, and everything seems so easy sometimes, I guess I got a bit complacent. As for unsightly bulges, a few more won't make much difference. -
Due to the trouble in the South, the authorities are tightening security at the airports, and demanding ID even for domestic flights. To be fair, it does state that on the ticket cover, but having left my passport behind in Pattaya the other day, I very nearly wasn't allowed on the flight to Chiang Mai. So anyone else travelling on a domestic flight in Thailand, please bring your passport or at least something else with your photo on it.

Ramster, I'm in Patong right now, so I went to check it out this morning (April 2nd) Certainly a good location, literally a stone's throw from Soi Bang La, and I doubt you'll find much cheaper here at 1,000 Baht per night (same-same whatever the time of year, and discounts for a week or more) No joiner fees, either. Very small hotel though, and the room they showed me seemed a little drab and basic. Good choice if you're on a tight budget, but otherwise (IMHO) I reckon you'd be happier at the Tropica Bungalows or (my favourite) the Thara. I'm here for a couple more days, so anything else you w

Non-bargirls' families
Eric_Olthwaite replied to Eric_Olthwaite's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Wombat, I found out the hard way that crossing the fingers in Thailand is apparently a symbol of a couple on the job. Did it once to a cute, friendly little thing in a travel agency in Phuket, and only learned later from a bargirl why she'd suddenly turned so frosty. Never did get on the flight I was trying for, either... Top Cat, No she doesn't work in Soi Diana, but you're dead right about being wary of "Good" girls too. Got involved with another receptionist once, got all soppy and carried away, and all the time she was seeing her Thai boyfriend behind my back. Thanks for the advice and in -

Thanks for all the tips. Met loads of bar girls over the years, but never any of their families, and I expect it will be quite different. Anyway, fingers crossed. Aah, maybe not; just remembered that crossed fingers mean something else in LOS. -

Jaffa, Thanks very much, mate. Seems like pretty sound advice to me. -
Non-bargirls' families

Yeah, realised as soon as I posted it that I chose a bad title. What I really meant was that I was looking for advice on how to behave with Thai people away from the whole bar scene. No offence to bar girls (many of whom I've loved before) or anyone involved with one. -
Been getting involved with a hotel receptionist, and soon I'm expecting to meet her mother and sister in Pattaya. I've read all the good stuff on the "Pattaya Pages" here, but I was wondering if anyone has any other tips, like how to avoid looking like either a cheap charlie or a flashy git, how to talk to her mother, what to tell them about myself, etc. Any advice would be very gratefully received.

I didn't think much to "Quaint Arse" either, mainly because of the FA's poor attitude. I always remember the little lad in front of me, who wasn't sure which drink to take from the tray; 'Look, it's juice or water; JUST GO FOR IT!' she snapped , and the poor little bugger (only about 5) really took it to heart; seemed to spoil the whole thing for him. Far from an isolated incident, either. But as Le Vicomte says the main issue is consistency, and that's where a new flight review section might come into its own, in allowing us to compare notes. So how about it Mods? [smiley=cheers.gif]

Glad to be of service, Capt. Have a great time! [smiley=cheers.gif]

(Apologies if this has already been raised) I guess the three main elements in our trips to LOS are girls, hotels and flights. Got the first two well covered here of course (although as a newbie I'm still not sure what goes on in the members' section), but how about a section for post-trip flight reviews to complement the Airline Deals board, ie similar to the way we have both an ongoing Hotel & Accomodations board as well as a more permanent and searchable Hotel Reviews section? Maybe a similar kind of thing to those on Skytrax http://www.airlinequality.com/main/flightreview.htm but o

Phuket and Samui hotels?
Eric_Olthwaite replied to eddydb's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Hi, Dennism. I like the look of the Tropica Bungalows. Can you give me an idea what sort of price I could expect for a double (walk-in) for a week in early April? Thanks. I used to regularly take a bungalow at the Duangjitt Resort until they pissed me off by insisting I'd only booked (and paid up-front for) a single and demanded a 1,000 Baht joiner. They even started charging for the drinking water. Strange way to treat a loyal customer, especially when the hotel was half-empty. [smiley=banghead.gif] -
On one of my very first trips to LOS I went to a soapy in Bangkok (can't remember the name) and in addition to the 100 or so Thai girls in the viewing room there were about half a dozen white girls. They were sitting together in a corner, quite separately from the rest, but were clearly there for the same reason, trying to attract my attention like the others. This must have been around 1990, long before many Russian and East European girls began working in Thailand, and I've never seen anything similar since. Anyone have any ideas what might have been going on?

Someone on the staff told me that the building at the front is due to end around the end of March or maybe sooner. Ask for a room around the new pool. Great hotel, thoroughly recommended. [smiley=gulp.gif]

Hi, LBJ. Yes, I think I know that area, and it seems pretty good now. Pity things didn't work out for you, but at least you had a go at it, unlike untold thousands of us who will only ever dream of owning our own business there. I bet you've got some great stories from those days too. Now you're footloose and fancy-free, a little older and a little wiser, do you think you could ever be tempted to try again?

Hi Fellas, and thanks both for the welcome. I'm certainly a newbie at these boards and suchlike, and I actually feel that way sometimes when I'm in Pattaya too, despite the number of times I've been there. In fact that's one of the things I love about the place, ie the way it's always springing surprises on me. Lost count of the number of times I've had that jaded "Yeah, yeah, been there, done that, bought the teeshirt" feeling, only for someone or something to restore my faith.

Hi there. I just joined tonight too, though maybe it's only afternoon where you are. Sorry to hear about you losing money in Pattaya, but good to know it hasn't put you off Thailand. Where was the LBJ Bar?
-
Thanks. I've been going to LOS for something like 15 years, and as you say, there's always something new to learn, and somehow this board is a lot more interesting and informative than a certain other, bigger, one. I reckon I'm going to enjoy this. [smiley=newbie.gif]

Cheers mate, I'm sure I will. BTW, the "Chilled-Out Entertainer" is a hero of mine too.

Not exactly a budget airline, but about a year ago I flew Bangkok Airways, BKK-HKT direct. It was about 500 Baht more than Thai, the frequency was a lot less, and the plane itself was pretty cramped, but the aviation anorak in me wanted to go on a new B717.

Sawasdee Krhap everyone. Been reading these forums for months, so I thought it was time I signed up. Been to LOS loads of times and met loads of fantastic ladies, but still a blushing virgin when it comes to this kind of thing, so be gentle with me...
