I think it depends on the sport, the medal, and the national environment. In the USA, I can't think there'd be great acclaim for a gold medal winner in badminton or 10m airgun. I'm guessing little Gabby Douglas will find doors opening for her. America loves its female gymnasts. Mary Lou Retton built a career out of endorsements, much to the ire of the left Thailand doesn't have any gold medalist this year, and I doubt the single silver medallist can do anything other than scary ghost movies.
