United has an "Economy Plus" class, but that's not the same thing as Premium Economy on other airlines. Most of the airlines which offer Premium Economy have more comfortable recliner seats, but UA just adds extra legroom to standard economy seats. I believe EVA offers better food in PE, but you get the same meal on UA as in Economy. The seat pitch on UA Economy Plus on trans-Pacific flights is 37" vs 38" on Eva, while the seat width on UA is 18.5 vs 19.5 on EVA. However, UA trans-Pacific flights have wifi (for an extra fee) and better seat-back inflight entertainment than EVA. UA Econom

The rep system with green and red votes has done a lot to keep things civilized on Pattaya Talk. A net negative reputation indicates broad disapproval of some aspect of a BM's posts, usually having to do with name-calling and personal insults. A few BMs have attempted to misuse the rep system voting, but they have been quickly exposed. In all, the rep system is very fair and a useful tool. It's a gentle reminder that BMs who indulge in personal attacks and mindlessly provocative posts with get voted down. Evil

Blaaaah! Humbug! Christmas dinner at Hooters in Pattaya was a huge disappointment. The guys who ate at homeless shelters in NYC (or prisons, mental hospitals, etc.) will have had better meals. More details later, but it was institutional food and not even what was advertised. This was supposed to be pecan pie. That would only be possible in the imagination of a cook who's never had real pecan pie. I had wanted mincemeat pie as advertised, but they didn't have it and had run out of apple pie. At least the waitress offered me a free cup of coffee. Total was 467 baht with service

Christmas Eve Buffet at Hard Rock
Evil Penevil replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
I did mention the price: It was 1,389 baht net (no ++) for the buffet with a free flow of booze (wine, beer, whiskey, etc) and 899 baht net if you just wanted the buffet. Santa Penevil -
This is what a Christmas buffet should look (and taste) like! Starz Diner at the Hard Rock Hotel laid on one of the best buffets I've ever eaten, Christmas or otherwise. I'm pressed for time right,m so I'll let the pics speak for themselves. Suffice it say that the dinner was well worth the 1,389 baht it cost, including a free flow of booze. Santa Penevil

Smokin' Joe's BBQ is an offspring of the next-door Steak & Co.on Soi Lengkee. It's been open about three weeks and is squarely focused on U.S.-style barbecue. with some Tex-Mex and Thai dishes to round out the menu. Smokin' Joe's is a casual but comfortable restaurant, the right sort of environment in which to enjoy a BBQ meal. A point of information before I continue with the review: Smokin' Joe's will be closed Dec. 25 so the staff can help with Christmas dinner at Steak & Co. The place mats have an interesting history of barbecue in the U.S. as well

In my childhood years, my Mom made between 30 and 50 fruitcakes for Christmas. Most were given as gifts to my Dad's relatives. It became a huge burden for her and she quit one year, which caused quite a stir in my Dad's family. Santa Penevil

A last-minute suggestion: Palmer's on Soi 13/4 off Beach Road. It doesn't take reservations, so just show up from noon onward on Dec. 25th and hope for the best. I don't have a pic of the menu, but it is a UK-style turkey dinner (one course) for 395 baht and 95 baht extra for Xmas pudding. Santa Penevil

One more restaurant with attractive prices- the Haven on Soi Lengkee: You have a choice between an all-you-can-eat buffet or various dinner options, all at the lower end of the price scale. Santa Penevil

If you haven't made your Christmas dinner arrangements yet, best to get your ass in gear or you'll risk eating pad thai, kebab and hamburgers on Dec. 24 and 25. Here are a few upscale places that probably still have seats available, thanks to the the price (the prices are all net, no ++): Bruno's Dusit Thani Hilton And for those of you who by choice or necessity are having gruel and crust of bread for your Christmas dinner, you can add a festive touch with a can of cranberry relish, available at Villa Market in Th

Hooters on Beach Road- The Food (updated Dec. 20, 2016)
Evil Penevil replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
It had been awhile since I had had a meal at Hooters, but when I dropped in Monday night to book a couple of seats for Xmas dinner, I decided to try the food again. At around 8.30 p.m., it was about half full on the outdoor veranda and roughly one-third full "inside." There have been conflicting reports as to whether smoking is allowed inside Hooters or not. I've never seen anyone smoke at the bar or in the covered dining area. Last night was the same. I saw no one smoking inside, nor were there any ashtrays on the tables or counters indoors. Smoking is all -
It seems pretty explicit that it is an all-you-can-eat carvery on the FB page. Santa Penevil

I visited Hooters Monday night to ask about reservations for Christmas dinner on Dec. 25th. I was told that reservations aren't necessary for one or two diners, just walk in. Hooters opens at 10.00 a.m. and the set dinner will be served from about noon, a waitress told me. I imagine a reservation would be wise for a larger group, especially if you want to sit in one of the booths and not at the bar stool tables. Wine is available on the drinks menu you get in the bar, by the glass and the bottle. So that's it for my Christmas dining: the buffet at the Hard Rock on Christmas

If the ++ means VAT and service, it would most likely be a total of 17% or 68 baht. So the final cost of the dinner would be 467 baht, still at the low end of things. Santa Penevil

Hooters is not a place that ranks high in the hearts and minds of Pattaya's Scrooges, but 399 baht is not a bad price at all for a two-course Christmas dinner. In fact, it's at the lower end of the Pattaya scale. I'll try to book it today. Thank you, Rhino Tusk, for bringing this option to my attention. It looks like it will be Hard Rock for me on Christmas Eve and Hooters on Christmas Day. Santa Penevil

A reasonably priced all-you-can-eat Christmas carvery at the Queen Vic on Soi Six: I imagine it would be very popular, considering the large number of customers the Queen Vic's weekly Sunday carvery usually gets. I don't know if they accept reservations, but give them a call soon if you're interested. Some other options. Prices in baht for a meal with starter, main course and dessert except where noted: LK Empress- 590 Cafe Pitini 995 Rosie O'Grady's 950 Pig & Whistle Jomtien 850 The Butcher's Arms 1,090 The Robin's Nest has an all-you-can-eat carvery with soup, roas

Another suggestion for the budget-conscious: The Blue Heeler (named for an Australian dog breed) is located on Soi Lengkee across from Retox. Unfortunately the ad and FB page don't give any details about what is included in the 300-baht buffet. Santa Penevil

Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated July 4, 2022)

My experience has been that any bar without it's own food service can have food orders brought in from nearby bars/restaurants. Evil -
Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated July 4, 2022)
Evil Penevil replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
I wanted something light for dinner a couple of weeks ago and had the grilled chicken sandwich on pita bread at the Golf Club (LK Metro) for 150 baht. A nicely grilled and generous portion of chicken with bean sprouts and slices of (for Thailand) good tomato. The only thing I didn't really like was the sauce, which seemed to be a combination of yoghurt and mayonnaise. But it was served on the side, so no problem. But not everything at the Golf Cub is healthy. I've had the chiliburger (135 baht) far more often than the grilled chicken. Evil -
Back in the U.S. for my pre-Christmas visit. My motel room had a microwave and fridge, so I decided to see what sort of Christmas dinner I could put together with ingredients that were pre-cooked or could be cooked in a microwave. Total cost for the plate below was $6.00 (210 baht) for turkey breast, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and stuffing. The veggies were left over from a microwave dinner. I bought everything at a supermarket. This was a microwave turkey dinner for $2.00 (70 baht): And the Dunkin' Donuts' turkey dinner sandw

If you haven't got your heart set on a traditional Xmas meal, this looks to be a very reasonably priced option for Christmas Eve: It's an all-you-can-eat BBQ for 300 baht.

I don't think it will be a problem to find a seat at any restaurant NOT offering some sort of special Xmas meal. And while a lot of places do offer an Xmas meal, probably 9 out of 10 don't do anything special beyond putting up a few decorations. But it does seem the number of farang interested in a traditional dinner is shrinking. I read that five years ago, the most popular British places were booked solid by mid-November. Ten years ago, the top places would be sold out one or two days after the start of reservations at the beginning of November. Some were booked fully without adverti

The Robin's Nest on Soi Diana has what is looking like the best value-for-money deal: an all-you-can-eat buffet for 695 baht. Please note that this price doesn't include dessert, which is an additional 85 baht for Christmas pudding. I imagine a seat at a table in the Robin's Nest will be in high demand on Dec. 25th. Book now if you're interested. This offer will appeal to a smaller number of Christmas diners: No doubt the taste will be fine, but the Wooden Box is a a bit too "alternative" and "fusion" for a traditional meal like a Christmas roast dinner.
