I'm working on the logistics of my first trip in two years.

I am planning to bring an unlocked phone (Samsung SGH-R225) with me to use in country.

Dual-band GSM 900MHz, 1900MHz

Can anyone confirm this will work once I have swapped out a chip? I apologize if this question has been asked before, but all my previous notes disappeared when someone stole my previous laptop (ouch!).

Thanks for any help

I hope to be there soon......please....real soon.

sfgrunt,

Like Sunny said if you do a search you will find volumes of information on cell phones in Thailand on this site.

I have a phone on the 1900MHz band and it works with the '1 2 Call' system in Thailand with no problem. All you need to do is get a sim card and your good to go with a phone number and add a phone card for talk time. One thing to remember, make sure you have a charger cord that is good for the 220 voltage in Thailand. Most of the ones in the US are only 110. I just got one off Ebay or you can pick them up in Thailand.

Disagree with Leo here. The 1900 band is N America only, the 900 is what you are using internationally. Most GSM uses either 900/1800, while N America uses 850 and 1900.

What does this mean? To use your phone in Thailand, you need to use AIS as the network, as they are the only one that runs at 900.

So, you might want to check the AIS website for what service options they have. Once you get here, you just buy the sim and you'r good to go.

Just got back from 3 weeks in Pattaya. I have an unlocked Nokia 5100, I took my UK sim out and put in a 1-2-Call one and it worked fine. The 5100 is triband but I think any Euro dual band moby would be fine.

My 1-2-Call sim with 300 baht of calls was only 500baht - absolute bargain.

Top-ups are available anywhere, 7-11 staff are really helpful and will even do the top-up for you as the automated message is in rapid Thai anyway.

Note it's far cheaper for you to receive calls from UK/backhome on a Thai mobile. I would just text the UK and tell them to give me a bell.
