K, I have flown with several different airlaines from the Uk to BKk and have views on most.

I generally travel in Business or First, but have tried some of the in-between classes and economy (only once though, its just too goddamn far not to be able to stretch out!)

 

Eva- evergreen deluxe- about £600 if booked in advance. Exceptional value with an old fashione type of business class seat and 38 inches of pitch (pitch, on an aircraft seat is measured from where your ass connects with the seat to the same place on the seat in front.) They have little personal screens and the food is ok. The seat has a foot rest and calf support and can be reclined quite nicely. this is usually the best value option available if you an live with 38" pitch and no Business class frills!

 

Emirates

Business class via Dubai. Around £1680 rtn. Seats ok with 50 inch pitch but nothing special. Superb food and drink, sexy air hostesses. Nice lounges more superb food and drink. Upgrade to 1st is £200 per leg witrh a much better seat.

 

Emirates economy

Nice seat, 34" pitch good food, good entertainment, same sexy air hostesses- free drink!

 

KLM via Amsterdam (business) £1450 rtn

Typically dutch (crap food, efficient cold staff) but seats like beds. ver nice.

 

SAS business (£1398 rtn)OK, good value, good food, ultra modern planes, good connections super lounge in

Stockholm.

 

British airways business £2998 rtn

If your feeling flush, this service is direct and hard to beat. Nice bed, good food and totty doing the beer runs!

 

Garuda Indonesia £1290 Business

 

May not fly from London anymore? But super size seats, Only 8 in the cabin, top prices, and direct flights. Sometimes dodgy on reliability, but very good when I have used them. Entertainment crap, food fair, totty 9/10.

According to Skytrax Emirates Economy 32"-33". 33 not much difference but 32 on long haul flight big difference.

Emirates, as well as being a tad optimistic with their 34 inch seat-pitch claims are the only major scheduled airline that still fits pax 10 abreast in economy in their 777s. You are effectively paying premium rates for a charter service. Seat pitch nowadays means very little since some of the newer seat designs and manufacturing materials effectively give you a couple of extra inches legroom.

If you fly long haul with BA on a regular basis - especially in first or club class - and own a certain number of shares in your own name (either 200 or 250) you get a voucher that entitles you to a 10% discount on flights. 250 shares at preent would cost you about £600, which would be recouped quite quickly.

 

Incidentally, with my shareholder discount I can fly club class to Bangkok from Heathrow for £2,318 including taxes. You are pretty much tied to your chosen dates - though you can change the return date for £200 (at least that's what the cost was on economy and economy plus)

 

BA's economy plus would cost me £961 (plus the cost of getting down to London from Edinburgh). The seat pitch in this cabin is 38 inches which is vast improvement on their cattle class

A further thought for those like me who are planning on making a permanent move to LOS. It is cheaper to buy a fixed date return ticket than a one way ticket (at least it is with BA). So looks as though I'll be buying a return ticket and simply not turning up for the return flight

You are correct, mirates legroom in peasant class is only 32-33 inches, my humblest apologies.

 

And yes its 2-4-2 on the 777 fleet in the back! very tight indeed. Similarly, its 2-3-2 in business which is outside the industry norm.

Hi Busta, can you tell me a bit more about the Business class seats on KLM, please? Do they fold really flat? What's the inflight entertainment like? Thanks for any info.

SAS is a very nice choice for us Scandis, but don`t know why you choose to mention the lounge in Stockholm as SAS doesn`t fly to Bangkok from there

But yes, it`s a very nice lounge

I do understand why people enjoy flying BA. Normally great service and they really know what they are doing so if some thing unexpected happens they can usually handle it very quickly.

 

But why pay so much to fly BA business class. Personally I would never pay over 2K for a flight but I guess it depends on how much cash you have.

 

If you take easter for example you can fly from EDI to BKK for £1,397.40 on Lufthansa or £1,404.00 on SAS.

 

But BA is £3,325.00 using this as an example I would rather go twice with SAS than once with BA.

 

But I am in no doubt that the BA product is the better product just don't think it's worth the price. Having said that it's better Value for money than World Traveller Plus which I really think is a rip off.

BA skytraveller plus (or whatever its calleed) is not good value. For the same money u can fly Kuwait airways in proper business claSS.

Eric asked about KLM biz class.

Just did it. The seats do not go flat, they are somewhat like the old BA seats...and have a silly goosneck reading light. IFE is fairly good if English is for you. I am a bit of an empty head as I watch the flying map....now that is painful as it goes through English, (imperial and metric) Dutch and Chinese.

They are an efficient airline.....there was a problem with an Engine that was declared as I drank my champers...we all disembarked and we were up in the air on another 747-400 within 2 hours which impressed me! BA rarely get there plane up on time without a problem.
