Capthy Pacific is runnig this special for Bangkok. http://www.cathay-usa.com/specialfare/specials.asp This plus they are still having the "Asia Pass" fare for multiple cities in SE Asia. Damn and I have already booked with someone else. Looks like a good deal for flying to LOS from the US. Thought someone might want to take advantage of this.

Hate to rain on anyones parade but this is not a good deal. No frequent flyer miles. I can book Philly or Newark to BKK on UA for $695+.

One problem for the JFK to BKK trip, is getting to JFK, as it is a pain in the arse...I live near Charlotte NC and no airline serves JFK directly from here. To solve that portion of the problem you need to get to LaGuardia Airport and do a transfer via a shuttle...

Some pre-planning is involved, as I really don't want to spend the night in NYC,

You just knew that was coming, didnt you BigD? :D :D

For the once or twice a year traveler I think it's a good buy. That's why I was glad to see Dave scoped it out and posted it early this morning.

We all have unique situations I think. From out here on the tundra, I have limited connections unless I want to shop for a one way to the West Coast and catch a bargain there. But that always involves changing airlines and hauling my baggage twice instead of once. Since I typically go to LOS three times a year and United flies out of both Minneapolis and O'Hare, I fly with them almost exclusively and use my FF miles to upgrade to Business twice a year and take my chances on the third flight. The last time I went tourist my FF class garnered me a free upgrade on three out of the four long legs on the round trip. It's a few more hours travel time, but it's a lot more comfortable.

It works for me, but not everyone's life or travels seem to find the right fit.

Have a great trip, Dave!!! :D B)

The listed seat pitch on CX (32") is better than UA (31").

PTVs, better food, hotter FAs on CX. Bring you drinks until you climb onto the beverage cart and start slinging your own poop. Potential 50-YO union slag with cankles and bad attitude on UA with likely not as good of service.

Hub,

What is a 50 y/o union slag? What is cankles? I've got almost 500,000 paid miles with UA and maybe two or three times I've experienced a hassle with the flight crew. I take it you want to fire the older flight attendants so you can look at younger women. Interesting point of view. Screw their pension. They don't need the money. What do you think happens to the young Asian crew when they get older? They get fired and replaced.

I take it you haven't flown UA international. The number of times they go around with drinks back in the cheap seats is comparable to the Asian carriers including CX.

I'll give you the 1" seat pitch and PTV. Food on the Asian carriers is as hit or miss as on UA, NWA which I've flown to BKK and S'pore many times.

Edit in: If it wasn't for union slags fighting 100 years ago you wouldn't have the 8 hour day, sick or vacation time, paid health care all brought to you by us union slags. :banghead

Sad BigD sad,

You have extrapolated some sinister view on me wanting to fire all unioned FAs or some such shit based on a humorous sentence with smilies interjected accordingly. I will say that some of the behavior I sometimes personally witnessed of domestic US international crews bordered on the surreal it was so appalling, particularly on NW. Whether it has to do with union seniority is another discussion for another time so don't put words in my mouth, please. And yes since you have taken us way off-track, if given the choice I will pick the airline with the more pleasant and attractive crew (pleasant by far being more important), but please don't try to put some moral spin on this discussion. You going tell us the completely unrelated stories about the crucible and what a great family whoremonger, excuse me man, you are again? :D :D

So you are saying the service on UA is as good as CX? Well your opinion and I bow to your greater knowledge of UA as I am more familiar with NW, but your opinion is not borne out by the links above.

You'll give me the PTV (which are very nice to have on those long flights) and seat pitch? How generous, but what about the eight other points I made on why the CX MAY be a better deal for some?

To each his own and I acknowledged UA may be a better choice for you, but I think you were a little quick to poopoo the CX deal as it is a good one for many. After all, this board is to "guide newbies" so I slanted my response that way. :D

You don't see me coming down on the Skytop or Alex do you? :D B)

Have a nice day,

Hub,

You were the one who mentioned "50 y/o union slag with cankles and bad attitude". Explain what you mean. Sinister view, I don't think so I just took your comment out to one possible conclusion based on what you wrote.

Why are you bringing up comments I made to you in a unrelated thread where I attempted to answer question's YOU posed to me. I'm satisfied with the answers I gave you. I guess your not.

So if you get the chance can you answer what is a 50 y/o union slag?

I bring it up because you have a tendency to obfuscate the discussion at hand by bringing up unrelated topics in trying to gain some type of morally superior position.

You well know what I meant, smilies and all, but I will not follow you down your littlle sidetrack. See sentences 2-4 of my last post.

Hub,

No problem on my end if your unwilling/unable to explain your 50 y/o union slag comment.

BTW, it's still not a good deal if you come to Thailand more then once or twice. If it works for you fine.

:eyecrazy :D :beer Once or twice a year? Once or twice ever? You still haven't explained how it the UA flight is better for first time flyers, flyers with another FF alliance, or if you come to Thailand :D once a year and don't qualify for Premier status or get enough miles for an upgrade?

Way to support your point - try and take it off on an unrelated moral tangent and then just reiterate your initial unsupported statement. :D

You know what BigD? You win, your logic has overwhelmed me! The CX is a shitty deal! :D :D

Hub,

It's not a shitty deal far from it. You brought up a couple of good points in a previous post. Difference in travel time. UA is a longer trip thru Narita but not all CX flights are non stop. I flew JFK to Vancouver with a 1 hour or so layover. On to Hong Kong with another layover. You save a couple of hours. Downside is when you come back to JFK. I get in so late I miss the last shuttle to Philly and have to rent a room at JFK, ouch.

UA is part of Star Alliance where you can use your frequent flyer miles on Thai, SQ and many others. Last trip UA was unable to book me on UA metal for a freebie. They got me out on Thai. If I wanted to go to Newark I could have gone on SQ.

For the guy who comes once a year and does no other flying. He pays for three and the fourth one is free assuming he flys from the east coast. Frequent flyer miles are a nice benefit.

I understand that some guys may want to save $100. on this deal but it's not available all year.

Other guys have gone off on western flight attendants because the women are older and it has annoyed me. You were the last one to walk thru the door.

Hey guys, in order to bring some civility back around here... not that I don't mind seeing BigD vs. someone other than ROLAND for a change. <laugh Does the CX transfer in HK require a Chinese transit visa for Americans? I have flown through ICN and NRT myself, but never HKG so am not aware of this... I appreciate your help!
