Does anybody have any info on Loy Krathong, I know it is in November. My other half keeps asking me to come over for this event. My question is ,does all of Thailand celebrate it or just certain areas.

Any help will be appreciated.

Same day throughtout LOS. Thus holiday is like Easter in that it bounces around each year with the moon. In 2001 it was on October 31st and this past year around the 26th of November. Each year you need to check the Thai calander.

Doorman,

I believe you are right. The full moon for November 2005 will be on Nov 15th. I missed Loy Krathong last year by 2 days so that I could spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my mother and siblings. I think that I’ll miss it this year, I’d rather be in LOS for my TGF’s birthday. That said I could be there this year for Loy Krathong and my birthday instead.

Nov 16 this year.

It's celebrated on the Full-Moon Day of the Twelfth Lunar Month.

How's that for trivia? <laugh

That sucks because I will not arrive until the following week. I really wanted to see all the cute TGs in their native dress.

The best places to get a feel of the real atmosphere are in the likes of Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai. In Bangkok try and get yourself down on the river opposite Wat Arun - it provides a great backdrop to the celebrations and some fantastic photo opportunities.

Loy Kratong is a water festival .which the thais celebrate with kratongs to the water gods basically .last year we went to Pak which is near Sukhotai and its a real carnival feel to it .markets,food,processions.music,and 10,000 kratongs each with a lighted candle float down river after 2 large floats for king and queen of Thailand go first .then you see hot air balloons ,go up into sky at intervals it is quite breathtaking .

I was lucky enough to be in Pattaya for Loy Krathong, all the girls dressed in Thai traditional dress, well, not all. On the beach it was a beautiful sight with all the little twinkling lights bobbing on the water and many similar lights floating in the air from the special small candle powerd "air balloons".

I could not help but be amused at all the little kids helping(?) to push the floats out to deeper water, and helping themselves to the money on the floats as offerings.

I think everyone should experience both this and the water throwing that goes on in April, its a lot of fun.

Last year I went to the GF'S home for Loy Krathong.

I sponsered 3 football teams, one of which got into the final and lost on penalties.

Watched 3 games in all. The opposition supporters kept plying me with Chang.

Then the team were presented with a case of it, for having the loudest supporters.

After that it was a concert 'till about 1030pm, I missed all the fireworks, but went to the river at Tamphan Hin, to float a Krathong. This is where it got a bit tricky, booze, slippery river bank in the dark and flipflops. I wanted to go down the steps, but my GF said it would be better upstream. So half way down the bank, I slip up, drop the krathong- candles and flowers everywhere, bruise my arse and get covered in Nam River mud. Put the thing together and float it out. The Gf says to bring luck, we must get another one'cause that one was damaged. By now, I was not talking to her, so she did the 2nd one herself. Next day, I have to stand by, while she relates events to all her freinds. I thought they were going to ask to see the bruises.

So remember, booze, darkness and water can be hazardous. :beer

I was in Pattaya for Loy Krathong last year and had a great time. However, we may go to Bangkok or elsewhere for it this year. There aren't any rivers or canals in Pattaya, so the krathongs are set out on the ocean. It was a very windy night (as anyone there will remember) and the krathongs kept getting either blown out or washed back into shore so it didn't quite have the impact it might elsewhere. Still, it's a very enjoyable experience no matter where you go. Walking along Beach Road throughout the day watching this amazing cottage industry spring to life as families set up stands to make some amazing and beautiful krathongs for sale is a sight not to be missed.

  • 5 months later...

Thought it might be appropriate to re-start this thead at this time.

I've just booked my flights for November, now I'm thinking hotels.

What do the guys who've done it think: should I stay in Pattaya with tilac or take her to Bangkok or somewhere else?

(Only in town for one week, so don't want to lose too much time travelling. 1luv )

Thanx in advance.

November 16 is the full moon. For the past two years the Beach Rd. walk was so fucked up it really took a lot away from the enjoyment of the festival. In past years vendors would set up all along the walkway selling krahtongs, food, and whatever. And many ladies in full costume to be enjoyed and photographed.

Unless there is a miracle on Beach Rd. and the holes are filled in in time for the festival this year, I would be tempted to go somewhere else to enjoy the holiday.

Little Roy
