Joiner fee is a scam. Until you buy your room and not some one bed promotion, the hotel not allowed to ask any extra money. IF your guest don't use any pay facilities as breakfast for example. So... if I visit a friend in his room they will ask also joiner fee? Stupid. In my first 3 yrs lived through RCI in good hotels and there were some nice tries. I offered him to discuss this with RCI.. the efforts were eliminated immediately. Never pay to legalize this scam. If you stay in an international chain ask a document about it to report to the mother company, as those joiner fees landing in the pocket of the staff. Other question are the local hotels.... ask the bill and move. In my history they many time changed their mind if I discussed it with a top manager and not with the desk clerk.

I guess this depends on whether your booking is based on room or people. If you've booked a room, then I reckon it's up to you who stays in it and the hotel has got no right to charge a joiner fee.

If, on the other hand, you booked a room for one person with no single supplement then I don't see how you can complain if you get charged. I did this at the Dusit a couple of times, and even with the 1000 baht joiner fee, it was still a bloody sight cheaper than booking the room for two people.

Joe, many hotels don't care if you bring in more than one gal. As long as you don't make too much noise that is. I cleared that with the manager of the Sabai Lodge some time back.

In any event, Do NOT allow them charge you extra. If they are unbending...MOVE!

My question is hypothetical .

Yes we can move if we wish ,

and yes being tactful and discreet go's with out saying .

But how far do we go before we accept a joiner fee .

Joe..."how far do we go before we accept a joiner fee?" I guess that can only be answered by the individual. As stated before...I don't accept it. And I avoid so-called five star hotels as often they do have such a policy. Besides, my personal opinion is that you are throwing your money away if you stay in the expensive hotels. In my case I am in Thailand nearly 9 months of the year so couldn't afford the cost anyway.

My criteria is: clean, safe, quiet, convenient location, reasonable price, and NO joiner fee. It is extremely easy to find such places.

Same here! I spend a minimum of 6 months per trip, any joiner fee's would easily shorten my trip dramatically.

Joiner fee's are charged to either discourage a person from staying at that particular hotel......or just a pure rip-off.

Family travelers staying at the "luxury" hotels can use the short time hotels or knowingly pay the joiner fee.

Far too many good hotels in Pattaya and BKK that are more than friendly too have us travelers resort to this EXTORTION!

And, as unpopular a subject this is.....I also rarely pay barfines, again B500 a day times 180 days = B90,000.

The money I save is put to good use by paying the ladies well, dinner, sidetrips, shopping etc.

While I like to spend the majority of my time in BKK.........I find plenty of tail without doing the barfine deal. Just what works for me.

Your Mileage May Vary!

I do agree Roy,

in Pattaya there is no reson to pay a joiner fee .

And yes if the hotel charges a fee ,

I take it my custom is not wanted ,

Did get charge for a second guest at the Beela vista Soi 7/8 ?

I did not make a fuss,

It was late at night so I asked for a exra towel ,

and checked out the next day and told them why .

What if you take back more than one guest ?

In the case of the Dusit, it depended who was on the desk. I think in theory it should have been 1000 baht per guest, but more times than not there was no extra charge for more than one.
