I'm looking for a decent ( good quality ) hotel in Samui right on the beach, near ( walking distance ) to the action. ( up to 3000- 3500 bht/night ) Of course a guest friendly one. Any ideas ?? If possible with a link.

Try the Galaxy in Lamai was guest friendly when I stayed there in May 2004, though it’s been renovated since and  has put up it’s prices quite a bit!

Also this gives a good over view of places to stay;

Samui Hotel Map

Thanx Montydog,

I never been before in Samui, but I heard that Lamai beach is too slow and quiet, no any action around, true, offered as the best beach on the island. That's why I'm seeking around Chaweng beach. I may be wrong, please add any advices as for a total newbie in Samui.

edited: looking the map you kindly offered.. where are the action places ? Like in Pattaya: Soi 2, Walking street ?

Gabor, you will not find anything like the number of bars & girls that are available in Pattaya on Samui. Chaweng is a much livelier place than Lamai but more orientated to the younger crowd, many backpackers and discos just not for me. The main action around there seems to be on soi Green Mango and the soi’s around there.

Lamai, has a collection of Beer Bars around the boxing ring just opposite the 7/11 and MacD it’s a great place to relax I’ve always found acceptable company and days relaxing on the beach and eating seafood can be a nice change from the madness that can be BKK or Pattaya.

If you’re just going to monger you will be disappointed I suspect, but if you want some stunning scenery and beaches with some accommodating company thrown in you can’t go wrong. I will be making my way out there again next May I love the laid back feel to Lamai and the “Lady Boxing” on a Saturday night is a must see.

Agree with Monty.

Samui is not Pattaya. but is a nice change ,

and Lamai is my area of choice ,

You do need to stay by the main areas as transport is a pain at night .

of a day I hired a motorcycle .

As this is the open forum,

and I know you are just a tourist .

I will stop there ,

and let someone else tell you where the best noodel carts are .

One thing to add ,

the cheap and easy way to get to you hotel ,

was by the airport s minibus ,

Its a set rate per person , to each area of Samui .

It work out a better deal than Hotel pickup ,

in May it was 100 baht to hotels in Chaweng .

I got the airport Minibus the last time, there were 5 of us, problem with it was they waited over 30 minutes until the bus filled b4 moving off, I'd rather pay the little extra and jump into a taxi and go straight away.

Nice place in Chaweng on the beach is Chaweng Villa resort, but make sure you look for the De-luxe rooms, Hotel prices are also more expensice in Samui than Pattaya

Trust me on this one, stay in Lamai rather than Chaweng. The Weekender resort has a good selection of rooms depending how much you want to pay. I had a beachfront bungalow with 2 big beds, aircon, TV,fridge etc forget how much probably around 1500.

Ask for Ken, he is around 70 years old but top man, also get a nice massage in the gardens, plus 2 pools.

The hotel is GF and in the centre of town, I have stayed there twice, last time for 11 nights, I was due 8 but extended it.

I plan to stay in February and pull in the Full Moon Party.

I feel really comfortable in Lamai, never had the need to go to Chaweng.

Saturday night fight night is not to be missed, and it's free admission, not fake like the one at entrance to walking St. These include girls from the bars knocking shit out of each other, starts about 1030, but it will cost you a 100 for a beer

there is a better hotel than the Weekender just down the road, may be called Pavillion, anyway begins with a P.

Lamai is pretty forgetable in the day, just chill on the beach or whatever, after dark plenty enough pussy although not many 9/10s except at Ladyboy cabaret show :chogdee2

Agree as there where 5 of you ,

its a good deal if your on your own ,

Did not have a long wait . luck of the draw .

in fact there was only 5 passengers on the bus .

as I have said Lamai gets my vote

Chaweng sucks GIANT moosecock! :D <laugh :o

Lamai is f*cking awesome! :gulp

The muay thai is great. Lots of girls and beer bars in Lamai. <laugh vv :D

You can walk everywhere in Lamai. :D

Weekender is a good choice of hotel but I *strongly* recpmend

MARINA BEACH RESORT (NOT Marina Villa next door)

marinasamui@asia.com

This hotel should be about 3000 baht but is only 1250. I paid 950 as a walk in January, but would pay 3000 if that was the price.

No experience of Aloha but I believe it's a pretty good place, more or less in the middle of town.

You'll have a good time in Lamai just don't expect it to be like Pattaya.

Beach is a great place during the day. :clap1

For Saturday night boxing all the bars have their own different coloured seating, it is funny watching Farangs come with a drink with one bar and sit in the seats from another bar. Mamasan soon gives em what for :clap1

The saturday box are in the regular bars ? You mentioned, that no entry fee, is that means they are some kind of special places ?

The fact, that Aloha in the middle of the city doesn't mean lower quality of the beach ?

BTW... bottled water. On my first trips I bought at the beach, on the street etc. and was throw out the half used bottles as I like only the very cold drings. Now I place a bottle for the night to the freezer. Next day I have a piece of ice in the bottle, it slowly dissolves and I have all the day ice cold drink with me.

Hi Gabor,

I have spent much time on Samui and in Lamai. It's a smaller beach than Chaweng, so it's not spread out as much.

You can't miss the boxing ring. It's right in the middle of a large beer bar complex on the beach road. They only have the free boxing on Saturday nights. Look around a bit to get a good seat with out an obstructed view of the ring. Ringside is good, but sometimes it's nice to sit back at the bar with one of the cutties.

I think there is still only one go go bar on Samui. It's in Chaweng close to the Green Mango. But many beer bars, especially in Lamai.

There is a Philipino band called "Ovada" which plays at the Siam Bar and Grill in Lamai. It's fronted by two hot chicks who play guitar and sing. It gets a little loud but I always enjoy it.

Another nice place is at the end of Lamai Beach. It's called "Buddy Beer". It's open 24 hours and the food is good. They have nice pool tables and foosball.

Samui is easy to get around on by motorbike. I always feel much safer than in Pattaya or Bangkok. If you're not very comfortable on a motorbike, you may want to rent one with an automatic shift. Around 200 baht a day to rent.

I hope this is some help.

Have fun.

You will see the bars all around the boxing ring in the main area, yes it’s “free” no entry price (it’s an open area) but its expected that you buy a few drinks from the bar who’s seats you are using.

Why everybody emphasize, that the box evening is free ? In Pattaya I know 3 boxing places, rounded with bars and all are free. And of course, if I sit in a bar I order something, same-same as in Pattaya.

Gonebamboo, in what aspect you feel safer in Samui ? Do you mean the traffic ?

What about the quality of the beach in the centre ? Cleanliness, water. ( around Aloha ) Are there any place for snorkeling? I mean see fishes.

Is there a good seafood restaurant ? ( walking distance )

What about the bar prices ? BF, ST, beer ?

Joe, what about the Lamai Cabaret ? I guess you have a sensible sense of humor and you recommended me Jenny beer bar a'la Samui ? :D

Hi again Gabor,

By safer I mean less traffic. I don't feel safe driving my self on a moto in Pattaya, but I am fine to drive the entire island ring road on Samui.

They have a few boxing stadiums on Samui, but the price of admission is a bit much. The Saturday night boxing in Lamai is only a big deal because Samui is a small island. They can't offer a lot of things to do, compared to Pattaya.

Beach Road in Lamai is lined with restaurants. Most will have the days catch on ice by the entrance. "Sala Thai" is one of my favorite restaurants there.

Lamai Beach is beautiful. You won't be disappointed.

Cheers

Aloha is OK, but suggest you only book for a night or two and check out the Marina Beach Resort (not Marina Villa next door).

Aloha, Weekender, and Marina have same same beach.

You're going to love the Samui airport, numero uno in the whole wide world!

The Honda wave riders in Samui are awesome, you have to be minimum age 9, maximum 90 B) to bomb around on one of those things.

Always 2 or 3 on the bike and no head protection required

The police only have a rare purge when they need some tea money.

It was a laugh one night going back to the hotel, scooter taxi man, drunk TG and a 17 stone pissed farang bringing up the rear, it's a wonder the front wheel touched the ground at all :D
