I'm not sure why we think that we should be able to buy something cheaper in Thailand. Any sophisticated electronic device can be purchased cheaper at home where there is price competition. Not many Thais can afford the high priced stuff that we take for granted.

I did a comparison a couple of years ago about digital cameras and laptop computers. I priced the same models in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpor, and Bangkok and wound up buying the same things on the Internet in the States for about 30% cheaper!

Cheers

Buy where you live and buy a reputable make. Most of the deals in LOS are self build.

How the fuck does some guy in a shed know more about what works best with what than Sony, HP, Compaq, IBM etc. who invest USD billions ? They don't is the answer and i couldn't tell one motherboard from another.

Mike I think the reason for this is because guy's come here and see all the Cheap copy's of Music and Software and Movies and assume that everything associated with them is less also that's my guess.

Computer goodies cost a little more here but not much. I bought my computer at Com City. I am not going to lug a computer on the airplane with me to save a few measly dollars. Lastly it wouldn't be very convienient to ship my computer overseas for warranty. I get my warranty here and now.....

Yes some vendors in Thailand don't even understand the word garrantee in Thai or English much less back up their product. But I was pretty lucky with my purchase. Had some bad memory and they fixed it right away.

My conclusion; buy it where youre going to use it.

I can recommend a spot here in Pattaya to buy computer hardware. It is on one of the top floors (around six floors up) of the Tuc com building located on South Pattaya Road approximately 1/2 mile East of 2nd Road on the South Side of the street. As you come up the escalator you will be looking right at the store which will have Hewlett Packard and other name brands visibly displayed.

I bought a Hewlett Packard Pentium IV computer running at 3 GHz from a Thai woman named Meow here. The computer has one 160 gig hard drive, 1 gig of ram, a 1394 port (for video capture), smart media and memory stick slots, a cd-dvd writer, usb ports, etc. I bought a Samsung 19 inch LCD monitor and also ordered for it a 200 gig hard drive so I could have two hard drives with 360 gigs capacity. All of this ran me around $1500 U.S.

When the 2nd hard drive arrived Meow recommended that I use "her shop" to have it installed when I mentioned that I would probably want to install it myself. So when I found the time I brought the computer in. Meow and the young Thai male who handles most of the tech work here gave me service within 2 minutes of my arrival. The job took the man around one hour and I was out of there and on my way back to the guest house. I was not charged a thing for the hard drive installation.

These folks are way high on their prices. At first I thought that they were not updating their site, but found they were selling 3.2gig machines so the edits can't be that old.

Example

Bangkok Computers sell 17" monitors starting at 16,500, locally here in Pattaya can be had for around 10,000

If they are that proud of their stuff they can keep it

I found a site long ago that can help you guage prices Price Watch. Prices here in Thailand seem to run about 5 to 10 percent more, but in the US you add about 8 percent sales tax

Another site if you want reviews on the latest greatest stuff is Toms Hardware

This store is partly farang owned and it is rather expensive for thailand, BUT, they do offer excellent after sales service which is not the norm here.

The only reason to buy computer hardware in thailand is if you intend to use it there and you want the thai script on the keyboard if it is a laptop. If you want something to benchmark prices against then THE I repeat THE website to visit is

http://www.outpost.com/

they sell processors memory hd dvd writes cases as well as the complete computers etc. they are pretty much the price to beat. :D :wanker

I had a system spec'd out at a hardware store in the US, wanted a custom built system using the latest motherboard and processor, video card and disk bus interface. I got a price in the US plus a list of components by model and manufacturer, but didn't want to take the chance of bringing it to Thailand and getting customs charges.

So, I went to Hardware House at Tuk Com and asked them if they could get the same components. Without exception, they could. The price for building it here was within 3% of the out the door price in California...and the guy brought it to my apartment, and set it up. When I had a problem with booting while a removable hard disk was installed, he came over and fixed it (was a BIOS problem).

So far the system runs great (Pentium dual core 3.0G, 1G RAM, 250MB SATA-II drive, WinTV, removable 250MB drive). About $1300 USD.

Overall, I am very happy with the "build it" solution.
