Getting Broadband Access in Pattaya

Recommended Posts

I am planning on moving to Pattaya. I must have broadband internet in order to move there. Can some of you give me information of any hotels that offer broadband in the rooms? Also any recommendation of nice condos that have availbilty of broadband in the rooms?

Thanks in advance

Should not be a problem these days to find a condo with broadband, or at least the possibilty to have it installed. But definitely double-check on this before you sign a contract, as there are some areas in town where the available ASDL lines are already used up.

Do a board search here also, this topichas been covered quite often!

You won't find cheap condos with ADSL installed before you move in but you could get a telephone line installed. Newer condos will have the internal wiring in place and will just need a simple connection.

I had it put into my condo and including telephone line it was around Bt7000 all in. 512/256 is Bt700 and 1024/256 is Bt1000 per month.

Monthly telephone costs are minimal, Bt86 per month.

Fuck ADSL ... you want Bluetooth through AIS!

It rawks!

You get mobility and .... (drum roll please)

57.6k bps!!!!

woo hoo!

I have my laptop

and I have a bluetooth enable cell phone to connect to the internet.

so .... I can take my cell phone and laptop with me anywhere.

And connect to the internet anywhere.

No setup cost.

Need a bluetooth USB adapter (800 baht)

AIS first month of internet usage is free.

Get the 700 baht package.

So, total cost per month for internet/cell phone usage is .... @ 1100 baht (depending on usage)

I'm on the internet 6 hours a day, and use my cell phone about 1 hour a day.

So, that's some heavy usage ... and not a bad total cost.

Remember, the mobility!

I can get a foot massage on the beach and be on the internet.

I can fuck your TG on Soi 6 while being on the internet (he he he ha ha ha)

I can stalk TabMule and post the trip report here before he posts it himself.

The Mobility!

But, so far, I have only used the internet here in my loom.

My cell phone sits here next to my laptop.

And I have a USB Keyboard and Mouse and Printer ... so my laptop is really like a real desktop computer.

(smiles)

Just my 2 baht worth of lame information.

Take it or leave it.

Yea Chris till the Battery dies :D

So if I get the right cell phone with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth adapter for my laptop, I can be anywhere and have broadband? sounds like the way to go.

Rex,

No you get speeds equal to Dial up no where near broadband

Soi 7 is correct.

Dialup speeds.

and mobility until the battery dies on your laptop or cell phone.

I forgot to mention that I have a spare cell phone battery and a spare laptop battery.

i come prepared for WWIII.

Also, because I have the Kool Kids Cell Phone (13000 baht) ... I can launch nuclear weapons from a display on the screen of my cell phone.

(just kidding)

But, I just play racing game and golf game on my cell phone.

Hi, Rex,

Try GPRS in LOS you can get it all over the country, and AIS does it, and no telephone lines, if you get the right package there are about 160 countries throughout the world that does this so far.

Try www.edgethailand.com and this will give you some details.

Cheers Doug.

I've also heard about some sort of long range Wi-Fi service that'll be available in some places soon. Apparently, there's a service radius of several miles. That would work great if some local company were to set up a few accesspoints around town. I'm so used to broadband that I'm not sure I could ever go back to dial up, except in an emergency.

As far as apartments go, we have free wireless high speed here at Nantana Garden View. Located off Soi Yume, kind of behind Carefour. Pretty fast most of the time. Great pool and rates are pretty good. Just a little off the beaten path.

  • 6 months later...

Just a caveat. Some get lucky installing adsl in an apartment or condo. Many others don't fare so well. I rented a View Talay condo and told the realtor to install the phone line and adsl so it was up and working when I arrived. A month and a half later, it still was not working. I had to move to a hotel that had broadband. The safe course of action is to rent where the adsl or wifi is already installed.

And always remember: a 512/256 ADSL Line here in Thailand is worth nothing if you need to do anything but web browsing and email.

If you have to do anything more involving than that - you will have to get and pay a decent ISP on top of your ADSL Line for halfway decent routing.

In Short: if you need/want anthing even remotely to what you would get in the States or EU for around 10Bucks/Month, you will have to pay around 3.000 bht/m here in Pattaya. (and it will take some time, too)

I waited 3 months to get my ADSL installed from TOT in Jomtien Beach, and it never did work. I went to TOT's office several times, was lied to every time, promised a visit by a tech several times, (never showed up), and finally gave up.

Even when I would visit Friends with ADSL, the service was spotty, going down for days at a time, speeds dropping down to dial up several times a day during heavy usage, etc.

Not a good country for broadband.

Another voice head from...

I already had a landline...which _doesn't_ go through a switchboard (this is important and unfortunately common in hotels, some condos, etc.)

I ordered a 512/256 ADSL connection from TTT phone company. They have an office in Carrefour. Bought a router (you don't want to use their 'free' modem or any modem..potential security probs). Did a self-install. They said my acc't would be actviated 7-days after I ordered the service ..and it was.

Problem with DSL is that is is often s-l-o-w during the day; okay early mornings & late night. I use to have DSL in the States and regularly obtained up to 1500kbs...but Thailand still has a long way to go to build up their infrastructure and reliability! YMMV

My neighbor bought one of these when he could not get ADSL also. We were in a high rise Condo in Jomtien Beach, but the range was at it's limit, and kept disconnecting every few moments. When it worked, the best he could get was about 11KB bandwidth.

I think that it had something to do with the steel and concrete in the building limiting the range.

If you get such a marginal connection in Jomtien, I wonder what kind of signal you would get in Issan. I am going to try to use my new cell with a USB adapter to at least get dial up speeds when i am in Issan.

Thanx for the info. The main problem with using a VOIP phone is that you must have at least 90 KB of bandwidth at ALL times, or the phone falls over and dies.

If you are in the middle of a call and the bandwidth drops, you lose your call, or when your phone is not in use, nobody can call you, as your phone is off line.

When you have good band width, they work great! I ended up renting space in a small Internet Café, and I could conduct my business there. It was just like I was in my office int he States - People could call me like a local call, as I had a Las Vegas phone number. The biggest problem was the time shift, as they were 9 - 10 hours ahead of Pattaya.

FYI, in my previous life, I helped set up a VOIP service for Oz.

My landlord has just installed a phone line and broadband in my condo (View Talay 2A) (I paid for the modem). It is MEANT to be a 512/256 connection but that is a joke. The best speed I've been able to get is about 213 kbs and a few moments ago it was 19 (NINETEEN) kbs. The average seems to be about 150 to 200.

I just read thru the http://www.edgethailand.com

website

quoting speeds of:

Dtac has extended its EDGE network from Bangkok down to Pattaya. If you have an EDGE enabled GPRS card then you will be able to use the new network. EDGE speeds are two to three times dial up: 80 kbps to 140 kbps, top theoretical speed is 230 kbps.

website claims they will come to you and do a demo

i ordered one and will be in country 26 june for 2 weeks

i get frustrated like hell with connection speeds etc

for me to come often, i must work a bit, not just simple email

i will take one for the team and test it out

i can live with CONSISTANT speeds that are slow

it fxxks me up to get inconsistant/disconnects etc

Question:

Any one using thier service on 12Call or Dtac??

While most probably seek more speed than this, whatever you learn of this option will be valuable and your report will be appreciated.
