Getting Broadband Access in Pattaya

I already had a landline...which _doesn't_ go through a switchboard (this is important and unfortunately common in hotels, some condos, etc.)

 

I ordered a 512/256 ADSL connection from TTT phone company. They have an office in Carrefour. Bought a router (you don't want to use their 'free' modem or any modem..potential security probs). Did a self-install. They said my acc't would be actviated 7-days after I ordered the service ..and it was.

Problem with DSL is that is is often s-l-o-w during the day; okay early mornings & late night. I use to have DSL in the States and regularly obtained up to 1500kbs...but Thailand still has a long way to go to build up their infrastructure and reliability! YMMV

Where are you located in Pattaya ? I Have the same service you have and my speeds are fast all day no mid day slowdown here. I live 500 meters from Carrefour.

No you get speeds equal to Dial up no where near broadband

Well if you are worried about the battery dying you could just use a USB cable to your cell phone, eliminates the need for bluetooth, although it is still an ocasional option, and your cell phone gets recharged via the USB cable!

 

But, I am not impressed, I go through TH GSM, prepaid and it really slows down in the late afternoon and evening, and seems to cost 1 baht per minute...that 500 baht on your card soon gets used up.

I've used the DTAC network through a pcmcia card. Biggest problem I had was the frequent disconnects. You will not be getting broadband speed, but it wasn't horribly bad either.

I use a Sierra Wireless 775 card while in Thailand. I was setup in BKK and normally get 90 to 110 for download. It does go for about 1 Baht/min and I keep the card charged up on a daily basis. But the freedom to go anywhere and have access is a plus, but I usually just stay in the room.

I had no problems with this wireless card in Thailand, as I was at the house {near Cambodia} and in BKK. Coverage was good and I got decent download speed.

 

The website is run by a British guy named Tim, he came to the Nana Hotel, set me up and showed me the ropes for 1500 Baht. My wireless card was bought in Kuwait and unlocked.

 

I used DTAC and usually bought a 300 Baht card on a daily basis. It was overkill, but I have enough credit till March 2007.
