I've had bikes for years and have had two serious accidents in england, After all that my experiences in thailand on bikes confirmed i'd never get one again in Pats or England.

While i was in Pattaya this week I had a call from my Auntie and my 17 year old cousin had a motorbike accident in Bournemouth and has so far lost one leg and possibly the other soon. Shes a stunning girl and now will never be the same. She hasnt woken up yet so doesnt even know about the leg.

The guy driving the bike done a runner and was supposed to be a close freind of hers, Once we find him if I have my way he'll have a lot worse than just lose a leg.

Here's the article from the BBC website

I love bikes and always will but my advice is stick to track use and stay off the roads. They are lethal.

Fully understand and do appreciate your polite comments in regards to the bike issue. Well noted!!

I have driven on beach rd, 2nd rd, 3rd rd, Sukhumvit to Lotus, Naklua, Trepasit and the likes. Rode the Big bikes to Rayong and also to The BKK Highway.

I think Ive travelled to quite a few spots over the years. The only thing that slowed me down was the heat on the helmet over time and road film in your face in major highways. I am also an avid rider and owner of an 1800cc Goldwing back home. You should try and ride that on a US west coast expressway at rush hour<<<

For the little 110CC bikes riding up and down beach road and 2nd road is not a big deal. Neither is it to drive to Jomtien beach. Most of the 15 yo kids have a motorbike to ride each day to and from school. I have had so much fun exploring back roads and finding temples and villages that you might overlook riding in a freaking baht bus. Finding hideway beach areas where just the two of us could be alone.

I have only hit 1 pothole in several years riding on beach road and I lost my glasses out of the front basket. Beach road and 2nd road is just fine and you wont hit it at 100 KMH. I can only say that I have saved 100s if not thousands of baht in taxi rip off fees and busses from having my own bike to ride.

There is nothing like having a sweet young lady sitting behind you on the bike

and holding on to you while pushing her chest up into your back :-) Now thats Hot!!!!!! At least Ill die happy!!!!!

for me there is no choice I either have a bike and see the sights or I don't have a bike and see sod all. I have bad legs so cant walk very far,due to the pain in my knees.Whilst I understand the risks that one runs in riding in Pattaya I also think that some of these opinions are a little on the Conservative side.If I ride smart and within my capabilities then the chances of me having a serious accident are not much more than if I was riding at home, where I would undoubtedly be travelling much faster, In Pattaya I drive at 30 mph or slower(i am on holiday and in no hurry) I keep my eyes open, and most importantly I dont ever drink and drive,If you follow these simple rules then your driving experiance should hopefully be a safe one.

I have had a few little problems riding around Pattaya mostly from Thai people not looking where they are going, but I have yet to have an accident and never drink and drive but I think you have to watch out for other people who are drunk in charge of a bike, seems like a few of these idiots in Pattaya, Thais and tourists alike. I have seen many accident in Pattaya involving bikes but it has not put me off riding. :eyecrazy :clap1 :chogdee2

My advice to some on the board is 'stay in bed' it's dangerous out there on the streets :D <grin

Seriously, as one of the posters noted its not that dangerous if you don't go over 30mph , go extra slow around big junctions, be very aware, always look over your shoulder when moving or turning left/right, common sense really.

And also let's not forget about the simple probabilities. As some would have it there must be 1000+ dead or maimed everyday in pattaya?

I reckon and it's a complete guess that there must be 1 accident per 2000+ motobike rides and maybe 50% of those could be avoided (too fast, didn't look, bad mechanics etc).

Again my advice is simple, if you haven't hired a bike before, do so because it's most probably the best 100bht you can spend. The payoff in freedom and flexibility is immense.

PS. I now hire from the nice English guy called John who lives/operates in the forecourt of the Sutus Court Hotel near the Diana Inn crossroads on Soi Bukkou. He's got good mopeds and I'd rather have a problem to sort out with him than some thai fuck.
