Apologies if this is a bit of a repititious query (dentists etc).

I'm in the middle of dental work involving 2 implants on one side and a bridge on the other. I intend to go to Pty in a few weeks and stay for around 3 months. By then, the implants will have been in for several months, the gums will have been reopened and the stem/stud whatever put on; and the tooth to hold the bridge will have had root canal work done.

Therafter, as I understand it, it's a matter of making and fitting the crowns/teeth on implants and as bridge.

Would there be the possibility of getting this done in Pattaya during the 3 months and to a european standard? ie a dentist totally familiar with such work who could simply take over where tghe french dentist left off. Obviously I have in mind saving myself a lot of money (vs France) and time, but not if it may be botched. If I can, is the International hospital on soi 4 my best bet?

I recall once seeing a very helpful thread with even dentists contributing - but can't find it now. Hope to be equally lucky with responses now.

Thanks a lot

pattysteve,

Thanks. Your info is very encouraging - and timely. I think I'll cancel my appointment tomorrow for the root canal work and also the implant work due later in the month and have it all done in Pty. Do you have a name you (or your friend) can recommend in Pty?

Also I hope someone will reply with equally encouraging experience with implants done there.

I had a new bottom removable bridge done in Pattaya after the one made in the U.S. would not fit right. After one look, the Dentist said that she would have to make a new one as it was totally f**ked up. Total cost was 5,000 Baht and it is perfect.

I took my now wife to her as she had an impacted wisdom tooth that needed pulling. Total cost was 800 Baht, including pain medicine.

I have found that the quality and service of dental work here is far superior than the states.

It seems clear that very good dental work is available. No-one has posted in regard to implants, but I'll assume that's done to a high standard too.

I did try a search on this forum - I'll try again. But otherwize I was thinking of going along to the International Hospital in soi 4 as a safe bet.

Thanks.

There is a BM named drilldr who is a dentist and has posted helpful stuff.

You might want to search for his posts, if you can.

I kinda recommend against a PM to him if your questions will be extensive. I'm sure he's not a BM here with the intent of finding himself answering a queue of such questions. He has posted good stuff and I have seen him ask questions and get answers so he may even post to your thread.

It's a good board. Guys try to give as much as they get.

Owen, thanks for the tip. Ok I won't bother him just yet. I've had enough commendation of Pty dental work to decide to postpone further such work in Paris until I've checked out Pty. All I really need now is for someone to confirm that the high quality of dentistry in Pty extends to putting/fitting crowns etc to implants. And secondly for someone to recommend the place where they had good implants done. Failing that I'll just pop into the international hospital in soi 4.

The one other thing that I noticed is Dentists here when they schedule an appointment, they only work on you, not like the states where they will work 2-3 chairs at the same time. You get the undivided attention of the Dentist.

I had lots of helpful responses, and apologize for raising this query just this last time - I'll be on pattaya in a fortnight anyway.

Has anyone had implants done and would recommend the particulat dentist for the work. I don't worry about the price because it seems clear already that it's bound to be far less than in europe and that the qua;lity will be at least as good.

Failing a recommendation it'll be just chance whether I get as good a dentist for this specialized work as I might have.

Thanks guys.

I had an Implant done at Napaporn Dental Clinic (Tel. O38-429357), Fax 038-427516), a little Soi between Pattaya Klang and Soi 7, not far from Tops Supermarket.

June 2005: X-Ray of jaw at Pattaya Bangkok Hospital to establish the exact location of the main nerve near the roots of the teeth to avoid any damage to it during the surgical procedure.

Late June 2005: Surgical implant (Nobel product made in Sweden). The stitches were removed a few days later. Took antibiotics for 5 days, no complications.

Early November 2005: Surgical implant stage 2 (healing abutment, Nobel Select 3.5mm-5mm).

Mid December 2005: Crown fitted

The total cost for the implant (molar, rear bottom right) was baht 60,000. You will find a bit cheaper in some of the other clinics, but I like Dr. Napaporn as she is my preferred dentist and speaks very good English.

The length of time between the different stages of the implant can be varied, but it is recommended to wait 2-3 months after the initial implant.

I also had a root canal filling with a crown fitted for extra strength, total cost baht 12,000.

I had another two crowns fitted to molars and also had all my old amalgam fillings replaced with porcelain or white fillings. I spent about 140,000 baht altogether. Similar treatment in Australia would have cost a multiple of that and I doubt if it would have been carried out to such a high standard

I had a crown put in at Pattaya Intl Hospital on Soi 4. The work was done by Dr Buddachart. It cost $190 vs $750 quote in the States. It is a perfect fit and I felt no pain whatsoever. I think Pattaya is a great choice for dental work.

She is the Dentist that I used - Cute as a pin, but I understand that she is married to the Doctor in the same clinic.

Great work also.

My thanks to Gonzo, dv34917 and billrussell for the responses.

I need root canal work prior to an adjacent bridge and 2 implant on the other side, so Gonzo's experience with Dr Napoporn is to the point. A recommendation at the P international Hospital would have been ideal as I'll be living v near by - but that's a trivial point, outweighed by her english and 'cuteness'.

Kicking myself that I didn't discover Pattaya's possibilities earlier - considering what I've spent recently on work that I'm not 100% happy with, and may well also get re-done now. Anyhow, I'm now set up - for the dentistry and also the diversions.

(I wonder how you guys identified the dentist: at random? by recommendation? through this forum? by trial and error?)

I literlly just walked by and as I needed Dental work, walked in....

The place was recommended by a German expat from Naklua. I took a Thai lady there to get a bad toothache attended to. I was impressed by the high standard of dentistry and decided to get my teeth fixed as well. The greater distance from Soi 4 is a non-issue. The bahtbus on Beach Road will get you there in less than five minutes.

Get off at Central Pattaya Road and walk less than 100 metres along Central Road on the right side until you get to the little soi connecting Central Road to Soi 7. Walk down that short soi and you cannot miss the clinic. There is a big sign Nappaporn Dental Clinic and the open-air counter facing the soi has signs advertising for Viagra and Cialis as well. Like Bill pointed out, the clinic is shared with her doctor husband, who uses the same waiting room and attends mainly to bar girls and punters from the surrounding bars.

The joint doesn’t look flash and there are beer bars all around it. You can watch the goings-on in the bar opposite lying in the dentist chair. Some of the girls in the bar look a bit rough but so do the punters. :chogdee2

Pattaya International Hospital has done all my dental work for the past 3 years. I tried the place because it was recommended by Hilly and Pattaya Pete.

Emil, Carpedium asked for detailed information about implants and root canal fillings. I don't think he is interested in a place where they are good at making dentures. :clueless

Just caught up with this string - hope it's not too late to reply.

I had my work done by Dr Buddhachart at PIH - one extraction, two crowns, three fillings. All totally excellent.

He says his colleague Dr Boonsri is the implant specialist there.

Suggest you email them at picpih@loxinfo.co.th

Philler. Actually your recommendation comes in time for me - just, as I leave for Patt in 48 hrs.

Another board member emailed me with a recommendation of PIH, and he had had implants done - as well as other dental work. And I wanted to hear from someone who had had implants. He used different names from yours. How did you in fact choose your PIH dentist? Was it that you chose PIH and then it was the luck of the draw on which dentist you were allocated? I assume you also found the prices far cheaper than England? And the quality as good as any there?

So far every comment about PIH has been positive.

Hi.

I found out about PIH from from Steve Seltzer's e-book, "Why Thailand?", which was full of brilliant advice for a newbie like me (as was).

I walked into PIH and asked for an appointment. Got one for the next day, with profuse apologies for the delay...

Dr Buddhachart was pot luck, but he gave me a full exam and scale and polish, and I came away with a detailed, costed list of the work needed. (Hadn't been to the dentist for 5 years, tut! tut!)

That was it for the first trip, and I was wondering when I could get back to LOS to get the work done when my one and only crown broke, so I had to email to make arrangements to return for a string of appointments.

This was no problem, and I went back and got all the work done over several days. The broken crown needed to be extracted, so we discussed implants versus bridges, and it was then he gave me his colleague's card.

I am likely to be going back in July, and I will soon start a detailed email discussion about implant (quoted Bt 70,000) or bridge (quoted Bt 21,000).

The work I had done last trip cost Bt 19,000, including cleaning, x-rays etc etc.

Dirt cheap compared with UK, and top class work as far as I can tell.

PIH is a super-clean, modern facility which now enjoys my total confidence. Hope this helps.

Good luck!

I had heard that they had a cute dentist working there. When I went in they were going to give me a guy and I told them that I wanted a female. Couldn't remember the ladys name that Hilly and Pete used, but they assigned Dr Darika to me. Turned out it wasn't the same one as Hilly and Pete used but she was still cute and I've been very happy with her. She's now expecting a baby so it looks like on my next cleaning I'll have to settle on someone else. They have around 4 dentists working there that do the examinations, cleaning and simple work like fillings. When something comes up that require more detailed work you get assigned to a specialist as when I needed a root canal, another dentist performed the job.
