Is the price cheaper if i book return flights in Thailand than the UK for a flight from UK to BKK!

It makes sense but you cannot book a return flight from Thailand if your outbound journey is UK/BKK. So naturally you have to be here in the first place.

 

I flew to Thailand one Xmas and the cost UK/BKK return was nearly £900, last Xmas I few BKK/UK return and the cost was £450. Normally there is a cost saving to book over here but I have a feeling that agents are getting a little smart and are pumping prices up, IMO

In fact you can book a UK - BKK ticket in Thailand, though it won't be cheaper than booking it in the UK.

In fact, in most cases it will be more expensive.

Dunno about the prices in the UK, but 3 weeks ago I was quoted a price for about 31.000 2 way 6 months to AMS all included with EVA, depends also what the bt is doing, but the most bargains over here are 1 month with a fixed return date, for a 3 month ticket there's mostly a big surcharge.

This was in BKK, if you're interested I can give you the name of the T.A.

Buying last week, in my situation (slightly complicated by the fact that I am flying from Edinburgh rather than London), I noticed that the premium I'd have to pay for a flexible return in Jume, one that would allow me to return anytime within the next year, was too high, especially the ones that charge a £100 or £150 fee when the time comes to change the return date.

 

Instead, I bought a one-way for £362. That got me BMI down to Heathrow and, then, Eva direct to Bangkok, with barely any wait time in Heathrow. That price may seem high, but you've got to figure that about £60 of that is the Edinburgh-Heathrow leg. Yes, I know that I could get a rtn from London for under £400 but those tickets cannot be changed and a 30-day rtn is of no use to me.

 

Most experienced expats seem to agree that it's cheaper to buy tickets in Thailand, so, I'll probably get a Thailand-UK rtn when the time comes, allowing me to buy all my tickets in Thailand from now on. At the very least, I'll be hoping to get a one-way back to Edinburgh for around the same price: £362 / 26,000b.

I would say that there are definately some bargains in Thailand if you can shop around. I was in China Air business class (the Taiwan one with a big flower on the tail) coming back to UK and was deeply upset by the guy next to me who had got quite a bargain purchased in BKK.

 

I use this method to 'cash in' my BA air-miles. You can rarely get convenient seats in both directions if chasing premium cabins. So I have had 3 one way trips between BKK and UK, availability was much easier and gave me flexibility as to when to travel back. Just got me a first class seat in August, normally a busy time.

Beware though, no visa and strictly speaking you cannot get onto a flight to BKK without a return booking.

It is about buying a UK to Bkk ticket in Thailand.

 

That is cross border ticketing and won't work out cheaper.

 

It's cheaper to buy a UK to Bangkok ticket in the UK and/or a Bkk to UK ticket in Bangkok.

Its ALWAYS cheaper to buy the ticket in the country of the 1st leg departure. Because the Agents/Airlines can offer local promotional fares.

 

However the Thai local market is generally cheaper than the UK local market, but not always.

 

If you buy a Thai Airways ticket in Thailand but LON-BKK-LON, they cannot offer any local promotions and will have to do cross border ticketing and charge the full UK fare listed in the UK reservation system, this will cost serious $$$$$'s.
