How far does the baht bus go in Jomtien? I am talking about the ones that leave from the end of 2nd Road and charge 10 baht. At what point do they turn around?

What options do I have if I need to go farther? I read that a tourist bus was introduced, charging 30 baht per person. Is this operating and does it go to south Jomtien?

I used to live at the Jomtiem Bach Condos near Soi 10. Usually when you get on one in Pattaya, they will take you as far as you want to go, and when you get off, they turn around.

That said, I have had a few turn around half way down the Beach and say that this is the end of the line.

The few times that I have taken one south, they usually as far as the tourist box, which is pretty near the end where the construction starts.

Thanks MrMango. I am not totally familiar with Jomtien, so a couple more questions.

The baht bus took you all the way for 10 baht? Or did you have to pay more?

A more specific question: will they go as far as, say, Chaiya Phruek Road for 10 baht, or will the fare be higher that far down Jomtien.

I went all the way to the end of Jomtien beach road, 2 of us, and didn't ring the buzzer until we finally got to the little seafood restaurant. I paid 20B for the 2 of us and walked off.

Normally, if you go over the hill, the fare goes to 20 Baht. This seems to be the rule, but I usually have the exact fare ready, get out, give it to them, and then immediately walk the other direction - Never had any problems...

The correct fare to Jomtien from the bahtbus queue outside the school ground on the corner of Pattaya Tai (South Pattaya Road) and Pratumnak Road is 10 Baht. It is 10 baht to anywhere in Jomtien. The drivers will not argue but make sure you give them the correct fare, 10 baht if you are alone or 20 baht when with a lady. I live near Soi 11 in Jomtien and use that route every day.

I see unfortunate new tourists making the mistake of asking the driver about making payment when they get off at their destination. They are often quoted 40 baht and higher and I have seen tourists handing over 100 baht bills with 20 baht change given in return.

When you get off anywhere in Jomtien pay the driver your 10 baht and you will be right. :chogdee2

Should you happen to catch a Jomtien bahtbus somewhere along Pattaya Beach Road (between the Dolphin Roundabout and Walking Street), then you will be expected to pay 20 baht per person, if he takes you to a destination past the Pratumnak-Pattaya Tai corner or all the way to Jomtien.

Hi, I think the double fare is meaning if you get on the baht bus further north in pattaya from where you are talking about. If you get the baht bus from the cnr of sth pattaya and 2nd rd the fare should be only 10 baht as far as they go into jomtien.

Even then I have only paid 10B.

Piero, the Red Buses are still running but the Green Bus is history now and the Yellow Buses never even started.

The Red Bus is a nice alternative to the bahtbus and it is 20 baht regardless of how far you want to go on it. It only goes in one direction though and at times it might require a bit of patience to wait for one to turn up. That can vary from 5 minutes to at least half an hour. It goes all the way from Jomtien Beach Road past Big C on Second Road, then through Naklua and from there to Sukhumvit Road. It goes along Sukhumvit Road as far as Soi Chayapuk, wheren it turns right and gets back to Jomtien Beach Road, next to the second police box.

It is a good way to do a cheap 30 km-sightseeing trip or to get to Pattaya Bangkok Hospital or some of the larger supermarkets and other destinations on Sukhumvit. I recommend it. There is more to Pattaya than pussy and beer. Unlike the infamous Jiggy I do not object to pussy and beer, but it is a bit difficult not to do anything else when one is a long-term resident. :clap1

Does anyone know the meaning of the phrase "cheap charlie"

Congratulations to another intelligent post. If only your country's ability to take penalty kicks at major football events were of such a high standard. :cussing

Things have changed since they put that information on the net. There is only the Red Bus left and it is 20 baht for a ticket per person. Nothing stays the same forever and information on the net can only used as a rough guideline. That seems to include a lot of the things said on this message board. Many things in Pattaya seem to change on a daily basis, unfortunately, not always for the better. Having said that, it is still the best place to be as far as I am concerned. :D

Sounds like we should support the new buses by riding them as much as possible, even if it is somewhat inconvenient waiting for them sometimes. Only higher ridership will increase investment in the bus line, which in turn will increase frequency. This will help counter the tyranny of the baht buses - competition never hurts in a situation like this.

Apart from these considerations, from what I read here the new bus line can be a very attractive alternative, especially going to and from Jomtien. To get to Big C from Jomtien, for instance, if I take a baht bus I'd have to exit one, cross a road, and get on another, and spend a total 20 baht. The bus line, on the other hand, will get me to Big C without any changes, in airconditioned comfort, and for the same cost.

This is based on what I read here regarding its route (by Gonzo) - I didn't see one when I was last in Pattaya in December.

The baht buses get a lot of their income from falangs because they charge us double. It's not a lot of money, but I think it is time to get back at them!

Actually, the Red Bus service is more efficient and regular now since they knocked the Green and Yellow bus idea on the head. There are more buses available for the Red route now. I think it was a government idea in the first place and is subsidized by them. There is no way the bus service could be making any money as a private enterprise without any other funding. The Red Bus is used by quite a lot of Thais as well.

Apropos, going from Jomtien to Big C on Second Road by baht bus. Most baht buses going from Jomtien to Pattaya drive all the way to Big C these days and the fare is 20 baht to get there as well. Some of them will go as far as the Dolphin roundabout and others will take a shortcut through Soi 2 to get back to Pattaya Beach Road and then head back. There is no need to change baht buses when going from Jomtien to Big C on Second Road.
