Have just booked a flight to bangkok with qatar £372 all in.

Thought that was a bloody good deal.

I usually fly with etihad but as etihads flights are £100 more expensive(£475) i thought i would book a flight with qatar.

Have heard they are a good airline(even though the airport in doha is shit) so i thought i would give them a go this trip.

35 days til wheels up and trip number 6 in a year and a half(think i may need to see my doctor and tell him i am addicted to THAILAND and THAI ladies) :banghead

WOO HOO!!

cant wait

How long will you be in Doha during the transfers.

I've heard some horror stories about being banged up in the transit lounge.

40 mins on the first leg(which isn't that bad)

4 hours on the return leg(grrrrrrrr!!)

But hey........ i don't give a shit and nor should you.

Doha isn't on a par with Dubai although the new terminal will be and a bit more. If you are after cigs/booze pefume then the duty free is as good as any, if not better (around 8 quid for 200 cigs).

The extension to the existing terminal has been completed in the last week or so and is a huge improvement on the previous set-up. The new gates (10-15) are an open-plan style rather then separate lounges as was the case previously. The dedicated first/biz class terminal will also open shortly and free up even more space for economy pax.

farman,

With the number of trips you are doing you really should settle on one carrier and get yourself a decent status in their FF programme. If you had done so previously, you would be looking forward to biz class lounge access on the stopovers and not worrying about the hardships of not getting a drink during the stopover.

There's no such thing as a transit lounge in Doha. Doha originating passengers and through passengers all share the exact same facilities.

Just booked for next Feb '07 with Emirates as best price I could get.

Qatar prices were great up to Nov '06 but not for next year.

Which was a blow as I flow with them this year and thought they were excellent.

As a novice how do you get registered as a regular flyer and how many flights per year are required to qualify?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Al

i'm probably going to book qatar but am a little concerned that my bag will miss the 50 minute connexion in doha. is that a serious risk? they offer an alternative connexion of several hours, which i obviously would rather not take.

has anyone had this problem on a quick connexion?

I have travelled MAN-DOH-BKK many times and always a tight connection at Doha especially outbound, but my baggage has always made it ok. I shouldn't worry about it at all. I shall be doing it again in 14 days! <grin

The vast majority of airlines have loyalty programmes. They operate in basically 2 ways, either operating solely as per Eva, Emirates etc. or as part as an alliance such as One World or Star Alliance. Whilst the alliances may seem better, they do not usually credit you with full mileage if say you hold a Thai card and fly with Lufthansa.

As Tom says, it is better to fly with one airline and stick with them, even if they are a little more expensive. NOt only upgraded lounges but free upgrade vouchers, perhaps 1.5 mileage accrual, business class check in, extra luggage allowance and free flights with points redemption. Well worth a good few pounds on the occasional trip.

Watch out though for some ticket codes giving zero, or only 25% or 50% of the mileage accrual. It may sometimes be better to pay a little more for a higher "grade" ticket within economy to collect full mileage.
