My free wireless access at home!!

Recommended Posts

On those rare occassions when I'm actually home in Long Beach, CA I live in a small condo complex, about 20 units in 2 levels around a courtyard. I've just discovered that there is someone running an open wireless network within range and I can connect to it! In fact, I'm connected to it at this very moment. The guy across from me has a set-up at home, but I've asked him and it's not his; he has an industrial-strength firewall.

I am, admittedly, a bit concerned about security, so needless to say I won't be logging onto my on-line banking or financial services accounts from here. Kind of fun, though!

Should you be worried, nah, just don't do anything with personal info, cause if you can get on so can others. How often are you in Long Beach, we should get together before you head back to Pattaya.

Hi,

Have you considered the moral and ethical considerations ?

Of what? You're asking someone who regularly flies halfway around the world to indulge his carnal appetites in the P4P scene -- which I imagine you do, too -- if he's "considered the moral & ethical" implications?

I have and I don't consider it immoral or unethical to use an open wireless link for low traffic things.

In most places people pay a fixed rate for a certain connnection speed. What I pay at home entities me

to download 1,528,823,808,000 bytes a month but I don't get anywhere close to that. Most of

the time the internet connection is idle. If some else uses to to read their mail or this bbs it won't affect me.

In fact I likely won't even be able to detect it.

That being said I don't have my wireless access point open and unsecured for two reasons: one is that it's inside my firewall. Secondly because if a spammer decided to use my internet connect to send out a bunch of spam it could result in my IP address being added to a blacklist which then limit the usefulness of my connection.

I never thought it was bad to use someone's open network... used to be that it was considered free if it was left open.

In fact, for a while, I put my cable modem on a free open hotspot (I use a wired network to a T-1 for work and stuff)

I read recently, however, that a guy got sued and lost for using his neighbor's wireless so do be careful...

As an aside... if anyone has a wireless router and doesn't want people using it or trying to break into your network with it... Secure it!

I consider my 'airspace' in my home to be my own.

If somebody invades my airspace with a wireless network I feel it's my duty to take advantage of it. :drunk

Only joking! I have no need to.

I bought a cable modem and have chipped it. I now have FREE 10 Mb internet :D

I have downloaded over 200 GB in 3 weeks. Mostly full DVDs from the newsgroup servers.

It's awesome!

Any UK Board Members that want one, PM me and I will sort you out.
