It's easier to give helpful suggestions if you are a bit more specific - What is your budget per night for a hotel room? Is location, i.e. close to Walking Street, important to you? Do you care if there is a swimming pool or not?

With a bit more info, someone will be able to give you a recommendation/

For your first visit I'd reccommend staying in the middle of the action, and that means Sois 7 & 8. Try the Flipper House or Flipper Lodge. The rooms aren't fancy but they're more than adequate. Others in that area that get good reviews include the Sun Beam, the Sunshine, the Bella Vista, the Eastiny, and the Globetrotter. Sois 7 & 8 tend to be a little noisy, but only if you want to sleep before 1AM. If you're having a typical Pattaya holiday you won't be sleeping that early.

Make sure and book in advance because most of these places will be full in January.

and it was great and guest friendly(quiet and relaxing area of soi 2)

Best plan is to book the 2 nights in the Dynasty in Pattaya ,then when you are in town if you don't like the hotel (the pool is tiny) then you can find a hotel on your own that you like ,The Lek Hotel is across the street and has a great pool and good rep .
